Introduction
The Sky-Watcher Classic 150 Dobsonian telescope is designed for visual observation of celestial objects. This instrument features a 6-inch aperture, providing bright and detailed views. Its simple, traditional Dobsonian design makes it accessible for beginners while offering performance suitable for observing nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies. This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your telescope.
Setup
Carefully unpack all components and ensure all parts are present before beginning assembly. The telescope consists of an optical tube assembly and a Dobsonian mount (rocker box).
Assembly Steps:
- Mount Assembly: Assemble the Dobsonian rocker box mount according to the included diagrams. Ensure all screws are tightened securely. The Teflon bearings should allow for smooth movement.
- Optical Tube Placement: Carefully place the optical tube into the assembled mount. The patented Tension Control Handles should be adjusted to provide stable movement without excessive friction.
- Accessory Installation:
- Focuser: The telescope comes with a 2-inch Rack-and-Pinion focuser and a 1.25-inch adapter. Insert the 1.25-inch adapter into the 2-inch focuser if you are using 1.25-inch eyepieces. Ensure it is seated correctly.
- Eyepieces: Insert one of the supplied eyepieces (10mm or 25mm) into the focuser.
- Finderscope: Attach the 6x30 straight-through finderscope to its bracket on the optical tube.

Operating the Telescope
Aligning the Finderscope:
Before observing, align the finderscope with the main telescope. Point the main telescope at a distant, stationary object (e.g., a distant tree or building during the day). Look through the finderscope and adjust its alignment screws until the object is centered in both the finderscope and the main telescope's eyepiece.
Focusing:
To achieve a clear image, rotate the focuser knobs. Start with the 25mm eyepiece for a wider field of view and easier focusing. Once focused, you can switch to the 10mm eyepiece for higher magnification. Remember to re-focus when changing eyepieces.
Movement and Tracking:
The Dobsonian mount allows for manual movement in both altitude (up/down) and azimuth (left/right). Gently push or pull the optical tube to point it at your desired celestial object. The Tension Control Handle can be adjusted to provide the desired resistance for smooth tracking.

Maintenance
Optical Tube and Mirrors:
The primary and secondary mirrors are fully multi-coated borosilicate with 94% reflectivity. Avoid touching the mirror surfaces. If cleaning is necessary, use a specialized optical cleaning kit and follow the instructions carefully to prevent damage. Dust on the mirrors typically does not significantly affect performance.
Collimation:
Newtonian telescopes require occasional collimation (alignment of the mirrors) to ensure optimal image quality. If images appear distorted or unfocused even after adjusting the focuser, the telescope may need collimation. Consult advanced guides or a local astronomy club for detailed collimation procedures. A collimation eyepiece or laser collimator can assist in this process.
Storage:
When not in use, store the telescope in a dry, dust-free environment. Use dust caps for the optical tube and focuser to protect the optics.
Troubleshooting
- Blurry or Unfocused Images:
- Ensure the focuser is adjusted correctly for the eyepiece in use.
- Verify that the 1.25-inch adapter is properly seated within the 2-inch focuser, if applicable. Incorrect adapter usage can prevent proper focus.
- Check collimation. Misaligned mirrors can cause blurry images.
- Difficulty Finding Objects:
- Ensure the finderscope is accurately aligned with the main telescope.
- Start with the lowest magnification eyepiece (25mm) for a wider field of view.
- Telescope Movement is Too Loose or Too Stiff:
- Adjust the Tension Control Handle on the Dobsonian mount to achieve the desired resistance for smooth movement.
