Introduction
The Xfinity XR8 U1 Out of Sight Adapter allows your Xfinity Remote to control your set-top box even when the device is not in direct line-of-sight. This is particularly useful when the set-top box is located inside an entertainment center, behind a television, or in another concealed location. The adapter facilitates communication between your compatible Xfinity remote and the set-top box using radio frequency (RF) signals, eliminating the need for infrared (IR) line-of-sight.

Figure 1: The Xfinity XR8 U1 Out of Sight Adapter. This small, black device features a 3.5mm audio jack on one side for connecting to a set-top box and a small button on the other side for pairing. The Xfinity logo is visible on the top surface, along with FCC ID and "Made in China" text on the bottom edge.
Setup and Pairing Instructions
Follow these steps to set up and pair your Xfinity XR8 U1 Out of Sight Adapter with a compatible Xfinity remote:
- Connect the Adapter: Plug the XR8 adapter into the 3.5mm jack on the back of your compatible Xfinity set-top box. This jack is typically labeled "IR remote" or "IR IN." Upon successful connection, a status light on the adapter should briefly turn on, then off.
- Initiate Pairing on Adapter: Locate and press the small "PAIR" button on the XR8 adapter.
- Initiate Pairing on Remote: Within a few seconds of pressing the button on the adapter, press and hold the "SETUP" button on your Xfinity XR5 or XR11 remote. Observe the LED status light near the top of your remote.
- Complete Pairing: When the LED status light on your remote changes from RED to GREEN, release the "SETUP" button. Immediately after releasing, press the "XFINITY" button on the remote. The LED status light on the remote should turn off, then flash green twice to confirm successful pairing.
After pairing, the remote should function without requiring direct line-of-sight to the set-top box. If the remote does not respond, repeat the pairing process.
Operating Instructions
Once the XR8 U1 adapter is successfully paired with your Xfinity remote, the remote will communicate with your set-top box using radio frequency (RF) signals. This allows you to operate your set-top box from various locations within your home without needing to point the remote directly at the box. The adapter extends the range and flexibility of your remote control experience.
All standard remote functions, such as changing channels, adjusting volume (if supported by the set-top box), navigating menus, and power control, will operate via the RF connection established by the XR8 adapter.

Troubleshooting
- Remote Not Responding: If your remote stops responding or loses its connection, try repeating the pairing process outlined in the "Setup and Pairing Instructions" section. Ensure the XR8 adapter is securely plugged into the set-top box.
- Intermittent Connection: Ensure there are no significant sources of 2.4 GHz interference near the adapter or the set-top box. While the adapter uses RF, extreme interference can sometimes affect performance.
- Power Cycle: If issues persist, try unplugging the set-top box from its power source for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Once the set-top box has fully restarted, attempt the pairing process again.
- Volume Control Issues: Note that some Xfinity set-top boxes may not have the capability to control the volume of your television directly. The XR8 adapter facilitates remote control of the set-top box, not necessarily the television's native functions.
