Safety Precautions

Always follow basic safety precautions when using your pressure cooker:

  • Read all instructions thoroughly before use.
  • Do not touch hot surfaces. Always use handles or oven mitts.
  • Close supervision is necessary when the pressure cooker is used near children.
  • Do not place the pressure cooker on or near a hot gas or electric burner, or in a heated oven, unless specifically instructed for operation.
  • Extreme caution must be used when moving a pressure cooker containing hot liquids or under pressure.
  • Do not use the pressure cooker for purposes other than its intended use (pressure cooking and canning).
  • This appliance cooks under pressure. Improper use may result in scalding injury. Make certain the unit is properly closed and sealed before operating. Refer to "Operating Instructions".
  • Do not fill the unit over 2/3 full. When cooking foods that expand during cooking, such as rice or dried vegetables, do not fill the unit over 1/2 full. Overfilling may cause a risk of clogging the vent pipe and developing excess pressure. Refer to "Operating Instructions".
  • Be aware that certain foods, such as applesauce, cranberries, pearl barley, oatmeal or other cereals, split peas, noodles, macaroni, rhubarb, or spaghetti can foam, froth, and sputter, and clog the pressure release device (vent pipe). These foods should generally not be cooked in a pressure cooker.
  • Always check the pressure release device (vent pipe and regulator) for clogging before each use.
  • Do not open the pressure cooker until the unit has cooled and internal pressure has been completely released. If the lid handles are difficult to push apart, this indicates that the cooker is still pressurized. Do not force it open. Any remaining pressure in the cooker can be dangerous. Refer to "Operating Instructions" for pressure release methods.
  • Do not use this pressure cooker for deep frying with oil.
  • The use of accessory attachments not recommended by the manufacturer may cause injuries or damage to the appliance.
  • Allow the unit to cool before cleaning or handling parts.

Save these instructions for future reference.

Setup

Unpacking and Initial Inspection

Carefully remove all packaging materials from the pressure cooker. Inspect the unit for any signs of damage. Ensure all components are present: pressure cooker body, lid, gasket, overpressure plug, and pressure regulator.

First Use Cleaning

Before first use, wash the pressure cooker body, lid, and all removable parts in warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely. Do not immerse the pressure regulator in water; wipe it clean with a damp cloth if necessary.

Assembling the Lid

Ensure the rubber gasket is properly seated inside the lid rim. The overpressure plug should be securely in place. Place the pressure regulator on the vent pipe on the lid. It should fit snugly but be removable for cleaning.

Operating Instructions

Adding Ingredients and Liquid

  1. Place the food to be cooked inside the pressure cooker.
  2. Add the required amount of liquid (water, broth, etc.) as specified by your recipe. Ensure there is always at least 1 cup of liquid to generate steam.
  3. Do not fill the cooker more than two-thirds full. For foods that expand (e.g., rice, beans), do not fill more than half full.

Securing the Lid

  1. Align the lid with the pressure cooker body according to the markings (if any) or by matching the handles.
  2. Rotate the lid clockwise until the handles are aligned and the lid is securely locked in place. Ensure the gasket creates a tight seal.
  3. Place the pressure regulator on the vent pipe.

Cooking Under Pressure

  1. Place the pressure cooker on a stovetop burner over high heat.
  2. Heat until steam begins to escape steadily from the vent pipe. This indicates that pressure is building.
  3. Once steam is escaping steadily, place the pressure regulator firmly on the vent pipe.
  4. Continue heating until the pressure regulator begins to rock gently. This indicates that the desired pressure has been reached.
  5. Reduce the heat to maintain a gentle rocking motion of the pressure regulator. Do not allow it to rock violently.
  6. Begin timing your recipe from this point.

Releasing Pressure

There are two primary methods for releasing pressure:

  • Natural Release: Remove the pressure cooker from heat and allow it to cool naturally. The pressure regulator will stop rocking, and the overpressure plug (if present) will drop. This method is suitable for foods that benefit from continued cooking, such as stews and roasts.
  • Quick Release (Cold Water Release): For faster pressure release, carefully place the pressure cooker in the sink and run cold water over the lid (avoiding the pressure regulator and vent pipe) until the pressure regulator stops rocking and the overpressure plug drops. This method is suitable for delicate foods like vegetables. Caution: Do not use this method for foamy foods or foods with high liquid content, as it may cause contents to spray out.

Do not attempt to open the lid until all pressure has been released. The lid should open easily once pressure is gone. If it resists, there is still pressure inside.

Maintenance

Cleaning After Each Use

  • Allow the pressure cooker to cool completely before cleaning.
  • Wash the pressure cooker body and lid with warm, soapy water. A non-abrasive sponge or cloth is recommended.
  • Remove the gasket from the lid and wash it separately. Ensure it is clean and flexible.
  • Clean the vent pipe on the lid using a small brush or pipe cleaner to ensure it is free from food particles.
  • Wipe the pressure regulator clean with a damp cloth. Do not immerse it in water.
  • Rinse all parts thoroughly and dry completely before storing.
  • The pressure cooker body is dishwasher safe.

Storage

Store the pressure cooker with the lid inverted on top of the body to allow air circulation and prevent the gasket from compressing and losing its seal over time.

Replacing Parts

Periodically inspect the gasket and overpressure plug for signs of wear, cracking, or hardening. Replace these parts annually or as needed to ensure safe and efficient operation. Genuine Mirro replacement parts are recommended.
