4. Setup

4.2 Installing the Grinding Wheel

The grinder comes with two grinding wheels: a 3.2mm radius profile disc for 1/4", 3/8" low profile, and .325" pitch saw chains, and a 4.7mm radius profile disc for 3/8" pro and .404" pitch saw chains. Select the appropriate wheel for your chainsaw chain.

  1. Ensure the grinder is unplugged from the power source.
  2. Open the protective cover of the grinding wheel.
  3. Use a hex screwdriver to remove the screw and washer securing the current wheel (if any).
  4. Carefully place the selected grinding wheel onto the spindle.
  5. Re-attach the washer and screw, tightening them securely.
  6. Close the protective cover.

4.3 Adjusting Sharpening Angles

The grinder features adjustable settings to match the specific requirements of your chainsaw chain. Refer to your chainsaw chain's specifications for the correct sharpening angles.

  • Chain Clamping Vice: The manual chain clamping vice holds the chain securely in place during sharpening.
  • Grinding Head Angle: Adjust the angle of the grinding head to match the top plate cutting angle of your chain.
  • Grinding Depth: Use the depth adjustment mechanism to control how much material is removed from the cutter.

5. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps for effective and safe chain sharpening:

  1. Secure the Chain: Place the chainsaw chain into the clamping vice. Ensure the chain is seated correctly and tighten the vice to hold it firmly.
  2. Adjust Grinding Depth: Lower the grinding wheel until it just touches the cutter. Adjust the depth stop to ensure consistent material removal for each tooth.
  3. Sharpening Process:
    • Plug in the grinder. The one-way motor rotation ensures safe operation.
    • Gently lower the grinding wheel onto the cutter. Apply light, consistent pressure.
    • Lift the wheel, advance the chain to the next cutter of the same orientation, and repeat.
    • Sharpen all cutters facing one direction first.
  4. Sharpening Both Sides: Once all cutters facing one direction are sharpened, adjust the chain's position in the vice or pivot the grinding head (if applicable) to sharpen the cutters facing the opposite direction. Repeat the sharpening process.
  5. Check Rakers: After sharpening, check the depth gauge (raker) height. If necessary, use a flat file and depth gauge tool (not included, but dressing brick and profile guide are) to file down the rakers to the correct height.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Oregon Mini Bench Grinder.

  • Cleaning: After each use, unplug the grinder and use a brush or compressed air to remove dust and metal particles from the motor, grinding wheel area, and clamping mechanism.
  • Grinding Wheel Inspection: Regularly inspect the grinding wheels for wear, cracks, or damage. Replace worn or damaged wheels immediately to maintain sharpening quality and safety.
  • Dressing the Wheel: Use the included dressing brick and profile guide to maintain the correct profile and sharpness of the grinding wheel.
  • Storage: Store the grinder in a clean, dry place, away from moisture and extreme temperatures.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your grinder, refer to the following general troubleshooting tips:

  • Grinder Not Starting:
    • Check if the power cord is securely plugged into a working outlet.
    • Ensure the power switch is in the "ON" position.
  • Poor Sharpening Results:
    • Verify that the correct grinding wheel is installed for your chain pitch.
    • Check if the sharpening angles (top plate and grinding depth) are correctly set according to your chain's specifications.
    • Inspect the grinding wheel for wear or glazing; dress or replace if necessary.
    • Ensure the chain is securely clamped and not moving during sharpening.
  • Excessive Sparks or Heat:
    • Reduce the pressure applied to the grinding wheel.
    • Ensure the grinding wheel is properly dressed and not glazed.
