1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your VIQUA VT4 UV Point of Use Drinking Water Filter System. Please read these instructions thoroughly before proceeding with installation or use to ensure proper function and safety.
The VIQUA VT4 is designed for point-of-use applications such as faucets and water fountains, handling flow rates of up to 3.5 Gallons Per Minute (GPM). It utilizes ultraviolet (UV) technology for water purification.
2. Safety Information
Always observe the following safety precautions:
- Disconnect power before performing any maintenance or service.
- Do not look directly at the UV lamp when it is operating, as UV light can cause eye damage.
- Ensure all connections are secure and leak-free before operating the system.
- This system is designed for indoor use only and should not be exposed to freezing temperatures.
- Follow all local plumbing and electrical codes during installation.
3. Package Contents
Verify that all components are present in the package. Typical contents include:
- VIQUA VT4 UV System (Stainless Steel Reactor Chamber)
- UV Lamp
- Quartz Sleeve
- Controller/Ballast
- Mounting Hardware
- Instruction Manual (this document)

4. Setup and Installation
The VIQUA VT4 system is designed for under-sink installation or other point-of-use applications. Professional installation is recommended.
4.1 Pre-Installation Checks
- Ensure adequate space for the unit and access for maintenance.
- Verify that the power supply matches the system requirements (100-240V, 50-60Hz).
- Inspect all components for damage before installation.
4.2 Installation Steps (General)
- Mount the stainless steel reactor chamber securely using the provided hardware.
- Connect the water inlet and outlet to your plumbing system. Ensure all fittings are tightened to prevent leaks. Note: Some units may have loose end caps from the factory; hand-tighten them before pressurizing the system.
- Carefully insert the UV lamp into the quartz sleeve, then insert the assembly into the reactor chamber.
- Connect the UV lamp to the controller/ballast.
- Plug the controller/ballast into a grounded electrical outlet.
- Slowly turn on the water supply and check for leaks.
For detailed plumbing and electrical diagrams, refer to the full installation guide provided with your unit or available on the Viqua website.
5. Operating Instructions
Once installed and powered, the VIQUA VT4 system operates continuously to purify your water.
- Power Indicator: The system features a light indicator on the controller that illuminates when the UV lamp is operational. A green light typically indicates normal operation.
- Flow Rate: The system is designed for optimal performance at flow rates up to 3.5 GPM. Exceeding this rate may reduce purification effectiveness.
- Water Temperature: The UV unit generates some heat. If there is no water flow for an extended period, the water inside the chamber may become warm. The first few cups of water drawn after a period of inactivity may be warm.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the continued effectiveness of your UV system.
6.1 Annual Lamp Change
The UV lamp has an effective life of approximately 9,000 hours (approximately one year of continuous operation). It is crucial to replace the UV lamp annually to maintain optimal disinfection performance.
- Disconnect power to the unit.
- Shut off the water supply to the UV system.
- Drain any water from the reactor chamber.
- Carefully remove the old UV lamp and quartz sleeve.
- Clean the quartz sleeve with a soft cloth and a mild acid (e.g., vinegar) if scaling is present, or replace if damaged.
- Install the new UV lamp and reassemble the system.
- Restore water flow and power, checking for leaks and proper lamp operation.
6.2 Quartz Sleeve Cleaning
The quartz sleeve should be cleaned periodically (at least annually during lamp replacement) to remove any mineral deposits or film that could reduce UV light transmission. Use a soft cloth and a descaling solution if necessary.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Water Leakage | Loose end caps or fittings; damaged O-rings/seals. | Ensure all end caps and plumbing connections are hand-tightened. Inspect and replace O-rings/seals if damaged. |
| No UV Light Indicator | Power outage; faulty lamp; faulty ballast/controller. | Check power supply. Replace UV lamp if expired or damaged. Contact Viqua support if ballast/controller is suspected faulty. |
| Water is Warm at First Draw | Water sitting in the UV chamber without flow. | This is normal. Run water briefly to flush out warm water if a cool drink is desired. |
| Reduced Purification Effectiveness | Expired UV lamp; dirty quartz sleeve; excessive flow rate. | Replace UV lamp annually. Clean quartz sleeve. Ensure flow rate does not exceed 3.5 GPM. |
