3. Setup and Calibration
Proper setup and calibration are crucial for accurate measurements. Follow these steps before use:
- Attach the Dial Indicator: Securely attach the Mitutoyo 2923SB-10 Dial Indicator to the bore gauge body. Ensure it is firmly seated and the stem is correctly aligned.
- Select Appropriate Anvil and Spacer: Choose an anvil and spacer combination that corresponds to the approximate internal diameter you intend to measure. The bore gauge measures 1.4 to 2.5 inches. The contact points are carbide-tipped for durability.
- Install Anvil and Spacer: Insert the selected anvil into the bore gauge head. If necessary, use a spacer to achieve the desired measurement range. Ensure the anvil is securely fastened.
- Calibrate with a Setting Ring:
- Obtain a setting ring of a known, precise diameter within your measurement range.
- Carefully insert the bore gauge into the setting ring.
- Gently rock the gauge to find the minimum reading on the dial indicator. This minimum reading represents the true diameter of the setting ring.
- Rotate the outer bezel of the dial indicator to set the pointer to zero at this minimum reading. The gauge is now calibrated for that specific diameter.
- Protect the Dial: Place the provided dial cover over the dial indicator face to protect it from dust and impact during use.
Note on Heat Transfer: The bore gauge features a large, hollow-structured grip designed to reduce heat transfer from the operator's hand, which can affect measurement accuracy. Minimize direct contact with the measuring components for extended periods.
4. Operation
Follow these steps for accurate internal diameter measurements:
- Prepare the Workpiece: Ensure the bore to be measured is clean and free of debris.
- Insert the Gauge: Carefully insert the calibrated bore gauge into the bore of the workpiece.
- Find the Minimum Reading: Gently rock the bore gauge back and forth within the bore. Observe the dial indicator. The lowest point indicated by the pointer during this rocking motion represents the true diameter of the bore.
- Read the Measurement: Read the value directly from the dial indicator. Since the gauge was zeroed to a known standard, the reading indicates the deviation from that standard. If zeroed to the exact nominal size, the reading directly shows the deviation from nominal.
- Repeat Measurements: For critical applications, take multiple measurements at different orientations and depths within the bore to assess ovality or other geometric errors.
Understanding Bore Gauge Types: This is a direct-measuring bore gauge, meaning it displays the measurement directly via the dial indicator. It uses a two-point contact system, which is effective for measuring ovality.
5. Maintenance and Storage
Proper care ensures the longevity and accuracy of your Mitutoyo bore gauge:
- Cleaning: After each use, wipe down the gauge with a clean, lint-free cloth. If necessary, use a mild, non-corrosive cleaning solution. Avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the finish or internal components.
