Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the safe and effective operation of your hydraulic disc brake caliper. It is highly recommended that installation be performed by a professional bicycle mechanic.

1. Caliper Mounting

Attach the BR-M8000 caliper to your bicycle's frame or fork using the provided mounting bolts. Ensure that the caliper is correctly oriented for your specific frame/fork and rotor size. If a mount adapter is required, install it according to its specific instructions before attaching the caliper.

2. Brake Hose Connection

Connect the hydraulic brake hose (sold separately) to the caliper. Follow the instructions provided with your specific brake hose and lever for proper cutting, fitting, and connection. Ensure all connections are secure and free from leaks.

3. Brake Bleeding

After connecting the brake hose, the hydraulic system must be properly bled to remove any air. Air in the system will result in a spongy lever feel and poor braking performance. Refer to the instructions provided with your SHIMANO bleeding kit (sold separately) for the correct bleeding procedure. Use only SHIMANO mineral oil.

4. Pad Installation and Rotor Alignment

Install the brake pads into the caliper. Ensure the pads are correctly seated and secured with the retention pin. Mount the brake rotor (sold separately) to your wheel. Align the caliper so that the brake pads are centered over the rotor and do not rub when the brake is not applied. This typically involves loosening the caliper mounting bolts slightly, squeezing the brake lever to center the caliper, and then retightening the bolts.

Operating Instructions

Brake Break-in Period

New brake pads and rotors require a break-in period to achieve optimal braking performance. During this period, perform approximately 20-30 moderate stops from a moderate speed (e.g., 20 km/h) without coming to a complete stop. This process helps to bed the pads to the rotor surface, improving friction and reducing noise. Avoid hard braking during the initial break-in.

Braking Technique

Apply brake pressure smoothly and progressively. Hydraulic disc brakes offer significant stopping power, so familiarize yourself with their feel in a safe, controlled environment. Avoid sudden, harsh braking unless in an emergency.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and performance of your SHIMANO Deore XT BR-M8000 hydraulic disc brake caliper.
