1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation of your Icom IC-2730A Dual-Band VHF/UHF Mobile Transceiver. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the transceiver to ensure proper functionality and to prevent damage.
The IC-2730A is a high-performance dual-band mobile transceiver designed for amateur radio enthusiasts. It offers simultaneous receive capability on both VHF/VHF and UHF/UHF bands, as well as VHF/UHF receive. Its user-friendly design includes symmetrically laid out main dials, volume, squelch knobs, and primary buttons for intuitive control across both bands.
2. Product Overview
The Icom IC-2730A features a large, easy-to-read white backlight LCD display, which is 1.5 times larger than its predecessor, the IC-2720H. This enhanced display provides larger frequency and channel name readouts with higher contrast for improved visibility. The transceiver delivers 50 watts of high power output on both VHF and UHF bands, utilizing a durable PA module. It also includes built-in 50 CTCSS and 104 DTCS tones with a split tone function for quiet standby and repeater access, allowing separate tone settings for repeater uplink and downlink. This bundle also includes a Ham Guides TM Quick Reference Card for convenient amateur radio information.

3. Setup
3.1 Unpacking and Inspection
Carefully unpack all components and inspect them for any signs of damage. Retain the packaging for future transport or storage.
3.2 Power Connection
Connect the transceiver to a stable 13.8V DC power source. Ensure correct polarity (red to positive, black to negative) to prevent damage. The IC-2730A requires a power supply capable of delivering sufficient current for 50W output.
3.3 Antenna Connection
Connect a suitable dual-band VHF/UHF antenna to the antenna connector on the rear of the transceiver. Use a high-quality coaxial cable with appropriate connectors. Ensure the antenna is properly tuned for the operating frequencies to prevent damage to the transceiver's final amplifier.
3.4 Microphone Connection
Connect the supplied microphone to the microphone jack. The IC-2730A features a remote head with a mic input, allowing flexible installation options.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Basic Operation
- Power On/Off: Press the POWER button to turn the transceiver on or off.
- Volume Control: Adjust the VOL knobs on both sides of the detachable faceplate to set the audio output level for each band.
- Squelch Control: Adjust the SQL rings around the volume knobs to set the squelch level, silencing background noise when no signal is present.
- Frequency Selection: Use the main dials (VFO dials) on either side of the display to change operating frequencies. The large LCD shows the current frequency and channel names.
- Band Selection: Use the dedicated band buttons to switch between VHF and UHF bands.
4.2 Memory Channel Programming
The IC-2730A supports 200 programmable memory channels. Programming can be done directly from the unit or via PC software (not included in this bundle).
- Select the desired frequency using the VFO dial.
- Access the menu to select a memory channel for storage.
- Confirm the storage.
4.3 Tone Functions (CTCSS/DTCS)
The transceiver includes 50 CTCSS and 104 DTCS tones for selective calling and repeater access. The split tone function allows different tones for transmit and receive.
- Access the menu to select CTCSS or DTCS tone settings.
- Choose the desired tone frequency or code.
- Enable the split tone function if different transmit/receive tones are required for repeater operation.
4.4 Dual-Band Simultaneous Receive
The IC-2730A allows simultaneous reception on two different bands (VHF/VHF, UHF/UHF, or VHF/UHF). The display clearly shows both active frequencies.
5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your transceiver.
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the transceiver. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Connections: Periodically check all cable connections (power, antenna, microphone) for secure fit and signs of wear.
- Environment: Operate the transceiver in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, excessive dust, and moisture. The unit is not water resistant.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No Power | Loose power cable, blown fuse, power supply issue. | Check power connections, inspect fuse, verify power supply output. |
| No Audio Output | Volume too low, squelch too high, external speaker disconnected. | Adjust volume, lower squelch, check external speaker connection. |
| Cannot Transmit | Incorrect frequency/offset, antenna issue, microphone not connected. | Verify frequency and repeater settings, check antenna, ensure microphone is connected. |
| Poor Reception | Antenna not properly connected/tuned, high interference. | Check antenna connection and SWR, relocate to reduce interference. |
