Ohaus MB23
Ohaus MB23 Moisture Analyzer User Manual
Model: MB23
1. Introduction
The Ohaus MB23 Moisture Analyzer is a precision instrument designed for fast and accurate moisture content determination. It utilizes an infrared heating element to dry samples, measuring the weight loss to calculate moisture content. This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your MB23 Moisture Analyzer.

This image shows the Ohaus MB23 Moisture Analyzer from an angled perspective. The top lid is open, revealing the circular sample pan in the center, which contains a light-colored granular substance, likely a sample being analyzed. Above the sample pan, the infrared heating element is visible. The front panel features a backlit LCD display showing '2.65 g' and other numerical readings, along with several control buttons.
2. Safety Information
Please read all safety warnings and instructions before operating the instrument. Failure to do so may result in injury or damage to the instrument.
- Always operate the analyzer on a stable, level surface.
- Do not touch the heating element or sample pan during or immediately after operation, as they can be extremely hot.
- Ensure proper ventilation around the instrument.
- Do not use the analyzer in explosive or flammable environments.
- Disconnect the power cord before cleaning or servicing the unit.
- Use only the original power adapter supplied with the instrument.
3. Package Contents
Verify that all items are present and undamaged upon unpacking:

- Leveling: Use the adjustable feet and the bubble level (if present) to ensure the analyzer is perfectly level.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Basic Measurement Procedure
- Prepare Sample: Ensure your sample is representative and prepared according to your application's requirements. Spread the sample evenly on a clean, dry sample pan.
- Place Sample Pan: Using the sample pan handler, carefully place the sample pan with the prepared sample onto the pan support in the weighing chamber.
- Close Lid: Gently close the heating chamber lid.
- Tare: If necessary, press the TARE button to zero the display.
- Start Measurement: Press the START button. The heating process will begin, and the display will show the current weight and elapsed time.
- Monitor Progress: The analyzer will continuously display the moisture content (typically in percentage) as the sample dries.
- End Measurement: The measurement will automatically stop based on the selected shut-off criteria (Timed, Manual, or Automatic - Preset Weight Loss/Time). The final moisture content will be displayed.
- Remove Sample: Carefully open the lid and use the sample pan handler to remove the hot sample pan.
5.2 Shut-Off Criteria
The MB23 offers flexible shut-off criteria:
- Timed: The measurement runs for a pre-set duration.
- Manual: The user manually stops the measurement.
- Automatic - Preset Weight Loss/Time: The measurement stops when the weight loss over a specified time period falls below a certain threshold, indicating the sample is dry.
Refer to the on-screen menu or specific button functions for selecting and configuring these modes.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
- Always disconnect the power cord before cleaning.
- Allow the heating element and sample pan area to cool completely.
