2. Important Safety Precautions
WARNING: Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury or property damage.
- Read all instructions before using the pressure cooker.
- Do not touch hot surfaces. Use handles or knobs.
- Close supervision is necessary when the pressure cooker is used near children.
- Do not place the pressure cooker in a heated oven.
- Extreme caution must be used when moving a pressure cooker containing hot liquids.
- Do not use the pressure cooker for purposes other than its intended use.
- This pressure cooker cooks under pressure. Improper use may result in scalding injury. Make certain unit is properly closed before operating. See "Operating Instructions".
- Never force open a pressure cooker. Make sure internal pressure is completely reduced before opening. See "Operating Instructions".
- Do not fill the unit over 2/3 full. When cooking foods that expand during cooking such as rice or dehydrated vegetables, do not fill the unit over 1/2 full. Overfilling may cause a risk of clogging the vent pipe and developing excess pressure.
- Be aware that certain foods, such as applesauce, cranberries, pearl barley, oatmeal or other cereals, split peas, noodles, macaroni, rhubarb, or spaghetti can foam, froth, and sputter, and clog the pressure release device. These foods should not be cooked in a pressure cooker.
- Always check the pressure release device for clogging before use.
- After normal operating pressure has been reached, reduce the heat so all the steam does not escape, which could cause the liquid to reduce and the pressure cooker to dry out.
- Do not use this pressure cooker for deep frying with oil.
- The pressure cooker is not dishwasher safe.

This diagram illustrates the main components: 1. Pressure Cooker Lid, 2. Rubber Gasket, 3. Vent Weight, 4. Guarantee Card, 5. Cookbook, 6. Service Centre Directory, 7. Cooker Body.
- Pressure Cooker Lid: The inner lid design ensures safety by locking from the inside.
- Rubber Gasket: Creates an airtight seal between the lid and the cooker body.
- Vent Weight: Regulates pressure release during cooking.
- Cooker Body: Made from pure virgin aluminum with a mirror-polished exterior.
- Handles: Sturdy handles for safe handling.
4. Setup and First Use
- Unpacking: Carefully remove all packaging materials, including any labels or stickers. Inspect the cooker for any damage.
- Initial Cleaning:
- Wash the cooker body, lid, and vent weight with warm soapy water.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry completely.
- Ensure the rubber gasket is clean and properly seated in the lid.
- Gasket Installation: Place the rubber gasket securely around the inner rim of the lid. Ensure it is flat and not twisted.
- Vent Weight Placement: Place the vent weight onto the vent pipe on the lid.

This video provides a general overview of the Hawkins Classic Pressure Cooker, demonstrating its components and basic handling. It shows how the inner lid fits and locks securely.
5. Operating Instructions
- Adding Ingredients: Place food and liquid into the cooker body. Do not exceed the maximum fill levels (2/3 full for most foods, 1/2 full for expanding foods).
- Closing the Lid:
- Insert the lid into the cooker body at an angle, ensuring the gasket is properly aligned.
- Rotate the lid until the handle aligns with the body handle and the lid drops into place, sealing the cooker.
- Ensure the lid is securely locked. The lid handle should be firmly pressed down to engage the locking mechanism.
- Heating: Place the cooker on a heat source (gas or electric stovetop). Use medium to high heat until steam begins to escape steadily from the vent pipe.
- Applying Vent Weight: Once steam is escaping steadily, place the vent weight onto the vent pipe. The cooker will now build pressure.
- Cooking Time: Reduce heat to maintain a steady pressure (the vent weight will whistle or rock gently). Cook for the recommended time for your recipe.
- Releasing Pressure:
- Natural Release: Remove the cooker from the heat source and allow it to cool down naturally until all pressure is released. The vent weight will stop whistling/rocking, and the lid will be easy to open.
- Quick Release (use with caution): For some recipes, you may quickly release pressure by lifting the vent weight. Do this carefully, away from your face and hands, as hot steam will escape rapidly.
- Opening the Lid: Once all pressure is released, remove the vent weight. Gently turn the lid handle to unlock and lift the lid. Always open the lid away from your face to avoid residual steam.
Video 2: Hawkins Pressure Cooker Operation (3L Model)
This video demonstrates the operation of a Hawkins pressure cooker, including how to properly close and open the inner lid, and how the safety weight functions. While a 3-liter model is shown, the operational principles apply to the 10.6-quart model.
6. Care and Maintenance
- Cleaning:
- Wash the cooker thoroughly after each use with warm soapy water.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or steel wool, as this can damage the aluminum finish.
- The cooker is NOT dishwasher safe. Hand wash only.
- Ensure the vent pipe is clear of any food particles. Use a small brush if necessary.
- Gasket Care:
- Regularly inspect the rubber gasket for cracks, hardening, or damage. Replace if necessary.
- For optimal performance, it is recommended to replace the gasket annually or as needed.
- Storage: Store the pressure cooker with the lid inverted or slightly ajar to allow air circulation and prevent odors.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Steam leaking from under the lid | Gasket improperly seated, damaged gasket, or food particles on rim. | Reposition gasket, replace gasket, or clean rim and gasket. |
| Pressure not building up | Lid not closed properly, insufficient liquid, or vent pipe clogged. | Ensure lid is locked, add more liquid, or clean vent pipe. |
| Lid cannot be opened after cooking | Pressure still inside the cooker. | Allow natural pressure release or use quick release method carefully. Never force open. |
| Food sticking to the bottom | Insufficient liquid or too high heat. | Ensure adequate liquid, reduce heat, or stir occasionally before sealing. |
