4. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to install the Fluidmaster 400A133 fill valve:

  1. Turn Off Water Supply: Locate the water supply valve at the base of the toilet and turn it clockwise until the water flow stops.
  2. Empty Toilet Tank: Flush the toilet to drain most of the water from the tank. Use a sponge or towel to remove any remaining water.
  3. Disconnect Water Supply Line: Unscrew the water supply line from the bottom of the old fill valve. Have a small bucket ready to catch any residual water.
  4. Remove Old Fill Valve: Loosen the locknut on the underside of the toilet tank that secures the old fill valve. Remove the old fill valve from the tank.
  5. Install New Fill Valve:
    • Place the new Fluidmaster 400A133 fill valve into the hole at the bottom of the toilet tank.
    • Ensure the shank washer is properly seated on the threaded shaft of the fill valve, inside the tank.
    • From the underside of the tank, hand-tighten the locknut onto the threaded shaft until snug. Do not overtighten.
  6. Adjust Fill Valve Height:
    • The fill valve's height is adjustable. To adjust, hold the top of the valve and twist the lower shaft counter-clockwise to unlock.
    • Extend or retract the valve to set the desired height. The critical water level mark on the valve should be at least 1 inch above the top of the overflow pipe.
    • Twist the lower shaft clockwise to lock the height in place.

  7. Connect Refill Tube:
    • Attach one end of the refill tube to the small port on the top of the fill valve.
    • Insert the refill clip onto the other end of the refill tube.
    • Clip the refill tube onto the top edge of the overflow pipe, ensuring the tube is directed into the pipe.
    • The blue roller-clamp on the refill tube can be used to adjust the flow rate into the overflow pipe, which affects the bowl fill level.

  8. Reconnect Water Supply: Reattach the water supply line to the threaded shaft at the bottom of the new fill valve. Hand-tighten the connection.
  9. Turn On Water Supply: Slowly turn the water supply valve counter-clockwise to restore water flow to the toilet tank.
  10. Check for Leaks and Adjust Water Level:
    • Allow the tank to fill. Check all connections for leaks.
    • The water level in the tank should be approximately 1 inch below the top of the overflow pipe. If adjustment is needed, repeat step 6.

5. Operating Instructions

The Fluidmaster 400A133 fill valve operates automatically. After each flush, the valve will open to refill the toilet tank to the preset water level. The refill tube simultaneously directs a small amount of water into the toilet bowl to restore the trap seal.

The water level in the tank can be adjusted by changing the height of the fill valve as described in the installation section (Step 6). The amount of water directed to the bowl via the refill tube can be fine-tuned using the blue roller-clamp.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure optimal performance and longevity of your Fluidmaster 400A133 fill valve:

  • Periodic Inspection: Annually inspect the fill valve for any signs of wear, cracks, or mineral buildup.
  • Cleaning: If the valve's performance degrades (e.g., slow fill), turn off the water supply and carefully remove the cap of the fill valve (refer to manufacturer's instructions for cap removal). Rinse any debris or mineral deposits under running water. Reassemble the cap securely.
  • Check Refill Tube: Ensure the refill tube remains properly positioned in the overflow pipe and is not kinked or obstructed.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Fluidmaster 400A133 fill valve, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Toilet runs continuously or cycles on and off.Water level too high, fill valve not shutting off, flapper not sealing.
  • Adjust fill valve height to lower water level (1 inch below overflow pipe).
  • Inspect flapper for proper seal and replace if worn.
  • Clean fill valve cap if debris is preventing shut-off.
Toilet fills slowly.Low water pressure, clogged fill valve, kinked refill tube.
  • Ensure water supply valve is fully open.
  • Clean fill valve cap for debris.
  • Check refill tube for kinks or obstructions.
Toilet does not fill.Water supply off, fill valve obstructed.
  • Verify water supply valve is open.
  • Inspect fill valve for severe blockages.
Water level in bowl is too low.Refill tube not properly positioned, roller-clamp too restrictive.
  • Ensure refill tube is clipped into the overflow pipe.
  • Adjust the blue roller-clamp on the refill tube to allow more water flow into the overflow pipe.
