Safety Information

  • Outdoor Use Only: This patio heater burner is designed for outdoor use only. Never operate indoors or in enclosed spaces.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation when operating the heater.
  • Clearance: Maintain proper clearance from combustible materials. Refer to your main patio heater manual for specific distances.
  • Gas Leaks: Before each use, check all gas connections for leaks using a soapy water solution. Never use an open flame to check for leaks.
  • Tip-Over Protection: This product features tip-over protection, which automatically shuts off the gas supply if the heater is tilted or knocked over. However, always ensure the heater is placed on a stable, level surface.
  • Hot Surfaces: The burner and surrounding metal parts become extremely hot during operation and remain hot for some time after shutdown. Avoid contact with hot surfaces.
  • Children and Pets: Keep children and pets away from the heater during operation and while it is cooling down.
  • Fuel Type: Use only propane gas as specified. Do not attempt to use natural gas or any other fuel.

Installation

This section details the installation of the Hiland THP-Burner-2.5 Pole Burner as a replacement part for compatible tall patio heaters. Ensure the patio heater is completely cool and disconnected from its propane tank before beginning installation.

1. Removing the Old Burner

  1. Disconnect the propane tank from the regulator hose.
  2. Carefully remove any existing reflector shield and its mounting hardware from the top of the heater.
  3. Locate and unfasten the screws or bolts securing the old burner assembly to the main support pole.
  4. Gently pull the old burner assembly, including the hose and regulator, out from the top of the support pole.

2. Installing the New Burner

  1. Unpack the new Hiland THP-Burner-2.5 Pole Burner.
  2. Carefully feed the pre-attached 5-foot hose and regulator down through the main support tube of the patio heater. Ensure the hose is not kinked or twisted.
  3. Align the mounting holes on the new burner assembly with the corresponding holes on the top of the support pole.
  4. Secure the new burner to the support pole using the supplied new hardware (screws/bolts). Tighten securely but do not overtighten.
  5. Connect the regulator to your propane tank. Hand-tighten first, then use a wrench to ensure a secure, leak-free connection.
  6. Perform a leak test: Apply a soapy water solution to all gas connections. If bubbles appear, tighten the connection and retest. If leaks persist, do not operate the heater and contact customer support.

3. Reflector Shield Installation (if applicable)

If your patio heater uses a reflector shield, you will need to reattach it or assemble a new one. The Hiland THP-Burner-2.5 burner part does not include shield mounting hardware, but it is compatible with standard 3-post emitter screens.

Video 2: This video illustrates the assembly of a patio heater reflector shield. This process is typically performed after the burner head is installed.

Operating Instructions

Once the burner is securely installed and connected to the propane tank, follow these steps to operate your patio heater:

  1. Ensure the propane tank valve is fully open.
  2. Turn the control knob on the burner to the 'PILOT' position and push it in. Hold for 30-60 seconds to allow gas to flow and purge air from the line.
  3. While still holding the control knob in, press the 'IGNITER' button repeatedly until the pilot flame ignites. You should hear a clicking sound.
  4. Once the pilot flame is lit, continue to hold the control knob in for another 10-15 seconds to ensure the thermocouple heats up and holds the pilot. Release the knob slowly. If the pilot goes out, repeat steps 2-4.
  5. After the pilot is stable, turn the control knob to the 'LOW' or desired heat setting. The main burner should ignite.
  6. Adjust the heat output using the variable control knob to your preferred level.

Shutting Down the Heater

  1. Turn the control knob to the 'OFF' position.
  2. Close the valve on the propane tank.
  3. Allow the heater to cool completely before moving or storing.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your Hiland THP-Burner-2.5 Pole Burner:

  • Cleaning: Keep the burner head and emitter screen clean from dust, debris, and insect nests. Use a soft brush or compressed air.
  • Gas Connections: Periodically check all gas connections for tightness and signs of wear or damage. Replace any worn or damaged hoses or regulators immediately.
  • Pilot Assembly: Ensure the pilot assembly and thermocouple are free from obstructions and corrosion. A dirty thermocouple can prevent the pilot from staying lit.
  • Storage: When not in use for extended periods, disconnect the propane tank and store the heater in a dry, protected area.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Hiland THP-Burner-2.5 Pole Burner, refer to the following common troubleshooting tips:

  • Heater will not light:
    • Ensure the propane tank has fuel and its valve is fully open.
    • Check for gas flow by listening for a hiss when the control knob is pressed in.
    • Verify the igniter is sparking. If not, check the AAA battery in the igniter.
    • Clean the pilot assembly and thermocouple.
  • Pilot light will not stay lit:
    • Ensure the control knob is held in long enough (10-15 seconds) after ignition to heat the thermocouple.
    • Clean or replace the thermocouple if it appears corroded or damaged.
    • Check for proper gas pressure from the tank and regulator.
  • Low heat output or irregular flame:
    • Check propane tank fuel level.
    • Ensure the gas line and burner orifices are clear of obstructions.
    • Verify the control knob is set to a higher position.

If problems persist after troubleshooting, contact Hiland customer support or a qualified service technician.
