2. What's in the Box
Upon unpacking your MIDAS DL16, ensure all components are present:
- 16-Input/8-Output Stage Box
3. Setup and Connections
Proper connection of the DL16 is crucial for optimal performance. Follow these guidelines for connecting your stage box:
3.1 Power Connection
Connect the supplied standard IEC power cable to the AC POWER inlet on the rear panel of the DL16. The unit supports a wide voltage range (100-240V, 50/60Hz).
3.2 AES50 SuperMAC Connectivity
The DL16 features dual AES50 SuperMAC ports (A and B) for digital audio and control. These ports are used to connect the stage box to a compatible digital mixing console (e.g., MIDAS M32, Behringer X32) or to cascade multiple stage boxes.
- Always use shielded twisted pair (STP) Ethernet cables with Neutrik EtherCon connectors for AES50 connections.
- Maximum cable length between two AES50 devices is 100 meters (330 feet).
- Connect AES50 Port A to your primary digital mixer or clock source. Port B can be used for cascading another stage box.
3.3 ULTRANET Connection
The ULTRANET port allows connection to personal monitoring systems (such as Behringer P16-M) or compatible TURBOSOUND active speakers. This port automatically routes outputs 33-48 from the AES50 stream.
- Use shielded twisted pair (STP) Ethernet cables for ULTRANET connections.
- Keep ULTRANET cable lengths below 75 meters (246 feet) for optimal performance.
3.4 ADAT Optical Outputs
The DL16 provides two ADAT optical outputs, delivering 16 channels of digital audio. These outputs carry AES50 channels 17-24 and 25-32, respectively.
3.5 MIDI In/Out
The MIDI In and Out ports allow for the extension of MIDI commands from your console to the stage. This can be used to trigger effects processors, control stage lighting, or other MIDI-compatible devices.
3.6 USB Port
The USB B-type port on the rear panel is exclusively for firmware updates. Do not attempt to use it for audio streaming or other data transfer.

4. Operating the DL16
Once connected, the DL16 operates as a digital extension of your mixing console, providing high-quality input and output capabilities on stage.
4.1 Microphone Preamplifiers
The 16 input channels feature MIDAS PRO microphone preamplifiers. These preamps are fully programmable and offer exceptional sonic clarity. Each input is equipped with switchable 48V phantom power, which can be activated from your connected digital mixer to power condenser microphones.
4.2 Output Routing
The DL16's outputs are managed through the AES50 connection to your digital mixer. The default routing typically provides:
- XLR Outputs: The 8 balanced XLR outputs on the front panel typically carry outputs 1-8 from the AES50 stream.
- ADAT Outputs: The dual ADAT optical outputs provide digital signals for AES50 channels 17-24 and 25-32.
- ULTRANET Output: The ULTRANET port carries AES50 channels 33-48, suitable for personal monitoring systems or compatible speakers.
4.3 Sample Rate
The DL16 operates at sample rates of 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz, determined by the clock settings of your connected digital mixer.
5. Maintenance
To ensure the longevity and reliable operation of your MIDAS DL16, follow these maintenance guidelines:
- Keep the unit clean and free from dust. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.
- Avoid exposing the unit to excessive moisture, extreme temperatures, or direct sunlight.
- Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit to prevent overheating.
5.1 Firmware Updates
Periodically check the MIDAS website for new firmware versions. Firmware updates can enhance performance, add new features, or resolve issues. Use the dedicated USB B port on the rear panel for this purpose, following the instructions provided with the firmware update package.
5.2 Rack Mounting
The DL16 is designed for rack mounting. The rack ears are removable, allowing for flexible placement. Ensure all screws are securely fastened when installing or removing the rack ears.
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your DL16, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:
- No Power: Verify the power cable is securely connected to both the unit and a working power outlet. Check the power switch position.
- No Audio via AES50: Ensure AES50 cables are shielded (STP) and properly connected to both the DL16 and the digital mixer. Check the mixer's routing and clock synchronization settings.
- High Latency: For AES50 connections, ensure cable lengths do not exceed 100 meters. For ULTRANET, keep cable lengths below 75 meters.
- No Phantom Power: Confirm that 48V phantom power is enabled for the specific input channels from your digital mixer.
- MIDI Control Issues: Check MIDI cable connections and ensure correct MIDI channel and command settings on both the console and the controlled device.
If problems persist, consult the comprehensive user manual for your digital mixer or contact MIDAS technical support.
