Image: Front view of the AUTONICS TCN4S-24R Temperature Controller. It features a black faceplate with a large red LED display for the Process Value (PV) and a green LED display for the Set Value (SV). Below the displays are control buttons: 'MODE', left arrow, down arrow, and up arrow. Indicators for AL1, AL2, OUT, and AT are visible on the left side of the green display. The top left corner shows 'TCN4S' and the bottom right shows 'Autonics'.

Setup and Installation

Mounting

The TCN4S-24R is a 1/16 DIN panel mount controller. Ensure adequate space for ventilation and wiring. Cut a panel cutout of approximately 45mm x 45mm (1.77 x 1.77 inches) and secure the unit using the provided mounting brackets.

Wiring

Power Supply: Connect the 100-240 VAC power supply to the designated terminals. Refer to the terminal diagram on the unit's casing for correct polarity and connection points. Always ensure power is disconnected before wiring.

Sensor Input: Connect your temperature sensor (e.g., thermocouple, RTD) to the sensor input terminals. Ensure the correct sensor type is selected in the controller's parameters to ensure accurate readings.

Control Outputs (Relay & SSR):

  • Relay Output: Connect the load (e.g., heater, fan) to the relay output terminals. This is a contact closure output.
  • SSR Output: Connect a Solid State Relay to the SSR output terminals. This output provides a voltage signal to drive an external SSR, suitable for faster switching and longer life applications.

Alarm Outputs: Connect external alarm devices (e.g., buzzers, lights) to the alarm output terminals. These outputs activate when process values exceed or fall below set alarm limits.

Note: Always consult the detailed wiring diagram provided with the physical product for precise terminal assignments and safety guidelines. Incorrect wiring can damage the unit or connected equipment.

Operation

Display Overview

The controller features a dual display:

  • Upper (Red) Display: Shows the Process Value (PV), which is the current measured temperature.
  • Lower (Green) Display: Shows the Set Value (SV), which is the desired target temperature.

Button Functions

  • MODE Button: Used to cycle through parameter groups and confirm settings. A short press typically moves to the next parameter, while a long press may enter or exit a setting mode.
  • Up Arrow (↑): Increases the value of a selected parameter or setpoint.
  • Down Arrow (↓): Decreases the value of a selected parameter or setpoint.
  • Left Arrow (←): Shifts the cursor position when setting numerical values, allowing for digit-by-digit adjustment.

Setting the Set Value (SV)

  1. In normal operating mode, the lower (green) display shows the current SV.
  2. Use the Up (↑) and Down (↓) arrow buttons to adjust the SV to your desired temperature. The Left (←) arrow can be used to move between digits for faster adjustment.
  3. The new SV will be automatically saved after a few seconds of inactivity or by pressing the MODE button to exit the SV adjustment.

Parameter Settings (PID, Alarms, etc.)

Accessing and adjusting advanced parameters (such as PID constants, alarm types, input sensor type, and temperature unit °C/°F) typically involves a sequence of button presses, often starting with a long press of the MODE button to enter a setup menu. Navigate through the parameters using the MODE button and adjust values using the arrow keys. Refer to the full product manual for a detailed list of parameters and their functions.

Maintenance

Cleaning

To maintain optimal performance and readability, periodically clean the front panel of the controller. Use a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth with mild detergent can be used, but ensure no liquid enters the unit. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.

Inspection

Regularly inspect wiring connections for looseness or signs of damage. Ensure the unit is securely mounted and that ventilation openings are not obstructed.

Calibration

While the TCN4S-24R is factory calibrated, professional recalibration may be required periodically depending on application requirements and industry standards. Consult a qualified technician for calibration services.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Display is blankNo power supply; Incorrect wiring; Fuse blown.Check power connections and voltage; Verify wiring against diagram; Replace fuse if necessary.
Temperature reading is inaccurate or "HHHH" / "LLLL" displayedSensor disconnected or faulty; Incorrect sensor type selected in parameters; Sensor wiring reversed.Check sensor connection and integrity; Verify sensor type setting; Correct sensor wiring.
Control output not activatingSV not set correctly; PID parameters require tuning; Output mode incorrect; External load faulty.Adjust SV; Perform auto-tuning or manually adjust PID parameters; Check output mode (heating/cooling); Test external load.
