Introduction
The Thule MultiLift Storage System is designed to provide an efficient and space-saving solution for storing large items such as rooftop cargo boxes, kayaks, and surfboards. This winch-operated system allows for easy lifting and lowering of items weighing up to 220 lbs (100 kg) to and from your garage ceiling, keeping them out of the way when not in use. This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the safe and proper installation, operation, and maintenance of your MultiLift system.
Safety Information
Always read and understand all instructions before installing or operating the Thule MultiLift. Failure to follow these instructions could result in property damage or personal injury.
- Maximum Load Capacity: Do not exceed the maximum load capacity of 220 lbs (100 kg). Overloading can cause the system to fail.
- Installation Surface: Ensure the ceiling structure is capable of supporting the weight of the MultiLift system plus the maximum load. Consult a structural engineer if unsure.
- Fasteners: Use appropriate fasteners for your specific ceiling type. Fasteners are not included with the system. 14 fasteners are required for installation.
- Clearance: Ensure adequate clearance around the lifted item to prevent contact with vehicles, garage doors, or other objects.
- Children and Pets: Keep children and pets away from the MultiLift system during operation.
- Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect all components for wear, damage, or loose connections. Replace worn or damaged parts immediately.
Package Contents
Verify that all components are present before beginning installation.

- Crank handle (4 ft long)
- Rope (5 mm x 10 m long)
- Mounting hardware (excluding ceiling fasteners)
- Installation template
Setup and Installation
The Thule MultiLift is preassembled with drill patterns for straightforward installation. However, ceiling fasteners are not included and must be purchased separately based on your ceiling type. A total of 14 fasteners are needed.
- Choose Location: Select a suitable location on your garage ceiling that can support the weight and provides adequate clearance for the item being stored. Consider the path of your garage door and any other overhead obstructions.
- Prepare Surface: Ensure the ceiling surface is clean and free of debris. If mounting to joists, locate and mark the center of the joists.
- Position Template: Use the provided installation template to mark the drilling points for the main winch mechanism and the four pulley assemblies. Tip: Tape the template in place to prevent it from moving during marking.
- Drill Pilot Holes: Drill pilot holes at the marked locations using a drill bit appropriate for your chosen fasteners.
- Mount Components: Securely attach the main winch mechanism and the four pulley assemblies to the ceiling using the appropriate fasteners (not included). Ensure all components are firmly tightened.
- Thread Rope: Carefully thread the 5 mm x 10 m rope through the pulley system as illustrated in the diagram. Ensure the rope runs smoothly without kinks or obstructions.
- Attach Loops: Form two secure loops at the ends of the rope to cradle your item (e.g., cargo box, kayak). Ensure the loops are balanced and can securely hold the load.

Operating Instructions
The MultiLift system is designed for easy and safe operation.
- Prepare Item: Position the item to be lifted (e.g., cargo box, kayak) directly beneath the MultiLift system. Ensure the item is balanced within the rope loops.
- Attach Crank Handle: Insert the 4 ft crank handle into the designated receiver on the main winch mechanism.
- Lift Item: Turn the crank handle clockwise to slowly raise the item. The winch mechanism will wind the rope, lifting the load smoothly. Maintain a steady pace and ensure the item remains level.
- Secure Item: Once the item reaches the desired height (up to 6 inches from the ceiling), ensure the winch mechanism is locked in place. The system is designed to hold the load securely.
- Remove Crank Handle: Detach the crank handle for storage when not in use.
- Lower Item: To lower the item, reattach the crank handle and turn it counter-clockwise. Control the descent carefully. The system allows the item to be lowered up to 78 inches from the ceiling.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your Thule MultiLift system.
- Monthly Inspection: Visually inspect all ropes, pulleys, and mounting points for signs of wear, fraying, cracks, or corrosion.
- Lubrication: Periodically apply a light lubricant to the moving parts of the winch mechanism and pulley axles to ensure smooth operation.
- Cleanliness: Keep the system free from dirt, dust, and debris. Wipe down components with a damp cloth as needed.
- Rope Replacement: If the rope shows significant wear or fraying, replace it immediately with a new rope of the same diameter (5 mm) and appropriate length.
- Tighten Fasteners: Check and tighten all mounting fasteners periodically to ensure they remain secure.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your MultiLift system, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| System is difficult to crank. | Overloaded; lack of lubrication; rope binding. | Reduce load (ensure it's below 220 lbs); lubricate moving parts; check rope for tangles or obstructions. |
| Item is not lifting evenly. | Unbalanced load; uneven rope length. | Adjust the item's position within the loops for better balance; ensure rope lengths are equal on both sides. |
| Rope is fraying or showing wear. | Normal wear and tear; sharp edges. | Replace the rope immediately; inspect pulleys for any sharp edges that might be causing damage. |
| Mounting hardware feels loose. | Vibration; improper initial tightening. | Retighten all fasteners. If loosening persists, consider stronger fasteners or reinforcing the mounting surface. |
