3.2 Connecting the UMC404HD
1. Power Connection: Connect the included power adapter to the DC IN port on the rear panel of the UMC404HD and plug it into a power outlet. The interface requires external power to operate.
2. USB Connection: Connect the UMC404HD to your computer using the provided USB cable. The USB port is located on the rear panel. 4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Input Connections
The UMC404HD features four combo XLR/TRS inputs on the front panel. These inputs can accept either XLR connectors for microphones or 1/4" TRS/TS connectors for line-level instruments (keyboards, drum machines) or high-impedance instruments (guitars, basses).
- XLR: For microphones.
- 1/4" TRS/TS: For line-level or instrument-level signals. Use the 'LINE/INST' switch to select the appropriate input type.
- PAD: Engage the PAD button if your input signal is too hot and causing clipping. This attenuates the signal by a fixed amount.

4.2 Gain Control and Signal Indicators
Each input channel has a dedicated GAIN knob to adjust the input level. The 'SIG' (Signal) LED illuminates when an audio signal is present, and the 'CLIP' LED indicates that the input signal is too high and causing distortion. Adjust the GAIN knob to ensure the 'CLIP' LED does not light up frequently.
4.3 Phantom Power
The UMC404HD provides +48V phantom power for condenser microphones. The phantom power switch is located on the rear panel. Ensure phantom power is only activated when using microphones that require it.
4.4 Monitoring
- Direct Monitor: Engage the 'DIRECT MONITOR' switch on the front panel for zero-latency monitoring of your input signals. This allows you to hear your performance directly without any delay from your computer.
- Mix Knob: The 'MIX' knob balances the level between your direct input signal and the playback from your computer.
- Monitor A/B: This switch allows you to select between two different monitor output pairs (A or B) for flexible monitoring setups.
- Phones: Connect your headphones to the 1/4" PHONES output and adjust the dedicated PHONES knob for comfortable monitoring.
4.5 Main Outputs
The 'MAIN OUT' knob controls the overall output level to your studio monitors connected via the XLR or 1/4" TRS outputs on the rear panel.
