Setup and Installation

Follow these general steps for setting up your Swann security system. Refer to the included 'Operating Instructions' (Quick Start Guide) for detailed, step-by-step installation procedures.

  1. Plan Camera Placement: Determine optimal locations for your 8 bullet cameras, considering viewing angles (70 degrees), night vision range (up to 82ft/25m), and power access. Ensure cameras are positioned to cover critical areas and are within reach of the 98ft/30m Ethernet cables. The cameras are IP67 weatherproof for indoor/outdoor use.
  2. Mount Cameras: Securely mount each camera using the provided screws and plugs. Adjust the camera angle for desired coverage.
  3. Connect Cameras to DVR: Run the CAT5E Ethernet cables from each camera to the corresponding input ports on the back of the DVR.
  4. Connect DVR to Monitor: Use the HDMI cable to connect the DVR to a monitor or TV for local viewing and system configuration.
  5. Connect DVR to Network: Connect the DVR to your router using the shorter 3ft/1m CAT5E Ethernet cable for internet access. This enables remote viewing via the SwannView Plus app.
  6. Connect Power: Connect the power adapters to the DVR and cameras (if applicable, depending on camera power method) and plug them into power outlets.
  7. Initial Setup: Follow the on-screen prompts on your connected monitor to complete the initial DVR setup, including setting date/time, password, and network configuration.
  8. Smartphone/Tablet Access: Download the free SwannView Plus app on your 3G/4G capable smartphone or tablet. Use SwannLink 'Peer to Peer' technology to connect to your system by scanning the code on the DVR, enabling remote live view and playback.

Operating Your System

Your Swann security system offers various features for effective surveillance:

  • Simultaneous Viewing & Recording: View and record from all 8 cameras concurrently, ensuring comprehensive coverage.
  • High-Resolution Video: All cameras provide clear 720p video capture resolution.
  • Night Vision: Cameras are equipped with powerful night vision technology, providing visibility up to 82ft (25m) in low light conditions.
  • Recording Modes: The DVR supports continuous recording and motion detection recording. The 1TB hard drive allows for 30+ days of continuous recording, with extended duration when using motion detection.
  • Remote Access: Utilize the SwannView Plus app on your smartphone or tablet to access live video feeds and playback recordings from anywhere with an internet connection.
  • Video Playback & Transfer: Easily locate incident video on the DVR. Transfer recorded footage to a USB flash drive via the USB video input port for backup or sharing.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your security system:

  • Camera Cleaning: Periodically clean camera lenses with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust, dirt, or smudges that may affect image clarity. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
  • Cable Inspection: Check all cable connections for security and signs of wear or damage. Ensure cables are properly secured to prevent accidental disconnection or damage.
  • DVR Ventilation: Ensure the DVR unit has adequate ventilation to prevent overheating. Keep vents clear of obstructions.
  • Software Updates: Check the Swann support website periodically for firmware updates for your DVR. Keeping the software updated can improve performance and security.
  • Hard Drive Management: While the 1TB hard drive provides ample storage, regularly review and back up important footage. The system will automatically overwrite the oldest footage when the drive is full.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your system, try the following troubleshooting steps:

  • No Video Display:
    • Check if the DVR and monitor are powered on.
    • Verify the HDMI cable connection between the DVR and monitor.
    • Ensure the correct input source is selected on your monitor.
  • No Camera Image:
    • Check the power supply to the camera.
    • Verify the Ethernet cable connection from the camera to the DVR.
    • Ensure the camera is properly configured in the DVR settings.
  • Poor Night Vision:
    • Clean the camera lens.
    • Ensure there are no obstructions directly in front of the camera that could reflect infrared light.
  • Remote Access Issues (SwannView Plus App):
    • Verify the DVR is connected to the internet and has a stable network connection.
    • Ensure your smartphone/tablet has a stable internet connection.
    • Check that the SwannView Plus app is updated to the latest version.
    • Confirm the DVR's network settings and P2P status are correct.
  • Recording Problems:
    • Check the hard drive status in the DVR settings.
    • Ensure recording schedules or motion detection settings are correctly configured.
