  4. Secure Mounting Hardware:

Install the provided mounting bolts and washers, but do not fully tighten them yet. Ensure the mufflers are properly aligned and level.

  5. Tighten Clamps and Bolts:

Once aligned, tighten the muffler clamps to the manufacturer's specified torque. Then, tighten the mounting bolts to the frame. Refer to your motorcycle's service manual for specific torque values.

  6. Final Checks:

Double-check all connections and bolts to ensure they are secure. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Operating Considerations

After installation, start the motorcycle and allow it to idle for a few minutes. Listen for any exhaust leaks. It is normal for new exhaust systems to emit a slight odor and smoke during the first few heat cycles as manufacturing oils burn off. The exhaust note may change slightly over the first few hundred miles as the system breaks in.

These slip-ons are designed to enhance the sound and performance of your motorcycle. Always adhere to local noise regulations.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance will ensure the longevity and appearance of your Vance & Hines Straightshots HS Slip-ons.

  • Cleaning: Clean the chrome finish regularly with a non-abrasive chrome cleaner and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive pads that can scratch the finish.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect all mounting hardware and clamps for tightness. Vibrations from motorcycle operation can cause fasteners to loosen over time.
  • Heat Discoloration: Blueing or golding of chrome exhaust pipes is a natural occurrence due to extreme heat. This is not a defect and can be minimized with proper engine tuning and by avoiding prolonged idling.
