Operating Instructions

1. Power On/Off and Volume Control

Rotate the top-most knob clockwise to power on the radio. Continue rotating to adjust the volume. Rotate counter-clockwise until it clicks to power off.

2. Channel Selection

The Retevis RT1 has 16 pre-set channels. Rotate the channel selector knob (the second knob from the top) to choose your desired communication channel. Channels are pre-set with CTCSS/DCS to reduce unnecessary transmissions. If you need to communicate with other brands of radios, contact the seller for firmware adjustments.

3. Push-to-Talk (PTT) Button

Press and hold the large side button (PTT) to transmit your voice. Release the button to receive. Speak clearly into the microphone located on the radio unit or the connected earpiece/microphone.

4. VOX Hands-Free Operation

The RT1 supports VOX (Voice Operated Transmit) for hands-free communication. This feature allows the radio to transmit automatically when it detects your voice, without needing to press the PTT button. This function needs to be enabled through programming (e.g., via CHIRP software).

5. Emergency Alarm

The radio features an emergency alarm function. Press the designated side button (customizable) in an emergency to activate the alarm, alerting your team for timely rescue. This function must be turned on through programming first.

6. High and Low Power Selection

The RT1 allows you to choose the transmission power (high or low) according to different environments. This can be configured via the custom side buttons, optimizing battery life or range as needed.

7. Compatibility

All RT1 radios have the same default frequency and are compatible right out of the box. For compatibility with other Retevis models (like RT86, RT29, RB85) or other brands, ensure they are on the same frequency and use the same CTCSS/DCS, which can be achieved through programming with CHIRP.

  • Check that the volume is set to an audible level.
  • Ensure antennas are securely attached.
  • Verify that CTCSS/DCS settings are identical on both radios if programmed.
  • Consider environmental factors (obstacles, terrain) affecting signal range.
  • If communicating with other brands, ensure frequency and CTCSS/DCS match.

3. Short Range

  • Ensure you are using the high-gain antenna for maximum range.
  • Check for obstructions like buildings, mountains, or dense foliage.
  • Verify the radio is set to high power mode.
  • Ensure the battery is fully charged.

Range Information

The Retevis RT1 radios are designed for long-range communication, offering ultra-high penetration to easily transmit through various buildings, mountains, and jungles. The actual range can vary significantly based on several factors:

  • Terrain and Obstacles: Physical obstructions like buildings, hills, and dense foliage can block radio signals. The RT1's high power design helps mitigate this in challenging environments.
  • Power Output: Higher power output generally leads to greater range. The RT1 offers high power for extended coverage.
  • Antenna Type: Using the high-gain antenna can significantly improve coverage compared to the common antenna.
  • Atmospheric Conditions: Weather and atmospheric conditions can affect signal propagation.
  • Line of Sight: Radios perform best with a clear line of sight between units.
