Optex SL-650QDP Quad Beam Sensor Instruction Manual

Comprehensive guide for installation, operation, and maintenance of your Optex SL-650QDP sensor.

1. Product Overview

The Optex SL-650QDP is an advanced quad beam sensor designed for reliable outdoor and indoor perimeter security. It utilizes multiple frequencies to minimize false alarms and offers a detection range of up to 650 feet outdoors and 1300 feet indoors. This manual provides essential information for the proper installation, configuration, and maintenance of the device.

2. Safety Information

Please read all safety instructions carefully before installation and operation. Failure to follow these instructions may result in injury, damage to the product, or voiding the warranty.

  • Ensure power is disconnected before performing any installation or maintenance.
  • Installation should be performed by qualified personnel in accordance with local electrical codes.
  • Do not expose the unit to excessive moisture or extreme temperatures beyond its specified operating range.
  • Use only specified power supplies and accessories.
  • Avoid direct exposure of the sensor's optical components to strong light sources, which may affect performance.

3. Package Contents

Verify that all components are present in the package:

  • Optex SL-650QDP Transmitter Unit
  • Optex SL-650QDP Receiver Unit
  • Mounting Brackets and Hardware
  • Alignment Tools (if included)
  • Instruction Manual (this document)

4. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is critical for optimal performance of the SL-650QDP sensor.

4.1 Site Selection

  • Choose a location free from obstructions between the transmitter and receiver units.
  • Avoid direct sunlight or strong artificial light sources shining directly into the sensor's lenses.
  • Mount units on stable, vibration-free surfaces.

4.2 Mounting the Units

Mount the transmitter and receiver units facing each other, ensuring they are at the same height and parallel to each other. The maximum distance is 650 feet (outdoor) or 1300 feet (indoor).

  1. Open the sensor casing by removing the front cover.
  2. Secure the mounting brackets to the desired surface using appropriate screws and anchors.
  3. Attach the sensor units to the mounting brackets.
  4. Ensure the units are plumb and level.

4.3 Wiring and Connections

Connect power and alarm outputs according to the wiring diagram provided inside the unit's casing or in the full technical manual. Typically, 12-24V DC power is required.

  • Connect power to the designated terminals (e.g., +V and -V).
  • Connect alarm output terminals (e.g., NO/NC and Common) to your alarm control panel.
  • Ensure all connections are secure and insulated.

4.4 Beam Alignment

Accurate beam alignment is essential for reliable operation. The SL-650QDP features an optical alignment system.

  1. Power on both transmitter and receiver units.
  2. Use the built-in viewfinder or alignment LEDs/meter on the receiver unit to precisely align the transmitter's beams.
  3. Adjust the horizontal and vertical alignment screws until the alignment indicator shows maximum signal strength.
  4. Secure all adjustment screws once alignment is complete.

5. Operating Instructions

Once installed and aligned, the Optex SL-650QDP operates automatically.

  • Normal Operation: When the beams are unobstructed, the alarm output remains in its normal state (e.g., Normally Closed circuit is closed).
  • Alarm Condition: If any of the four beams are simultaneously interrupted for a preset duration (typically adjustable), the receiver unit will trigger the alarm output, signaling an intrusion.
  • Frequency Selection: The SL-650QDP allows for multiple frequency channels to prevent interference when multiple beam sets are installed in close proximity. Refer to the unit's internal dip switches for frequency selection.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the long-term reliability and performance of your sensor.

  • Cleaning: Periodically clean the optical lenses of both transmitter and receiver units using a soft, lint-free cloth and a mild cleaning solution (e.g., lens cleaner). Dust, dirt, spiderwebs, or snow can obstruct the beams.
  • Alignment Check: Annually, or after severe weather conditions, verify the beam alignment using the built-in alignment indicators. Re-align if necessary.
  • Physical Inspection: Check for any physical damage to the casing, mounting brackets, or wiring. Ensure all screws are tight.
  • Vegetation Control: Trim any vegetation that may grow into the beam path.

7. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your SL-650QDP sensor, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
False AlarmsMisalignment, strong sunlight, spiderwebs/debris on lens, swaying vegetation, interference from other sensors.Re-align beams, clean lenses, trim vegetation, change frequency channel, install sun shields.
No Alarm TriggerPower issue, wiring error, complete beam obstruction, faulty unit.Check power supply, verify wiring connections, clear beam path, test unit functionality.
Alignment DifficultiesUnits not level/plumb, excessive distance, severe weather conditions.Ensure units are perfectly level and plumb, check distance against specifications, wait for clear weather.

If the problem persists after attempting these solutions, please contact Optex technical support.
