5. Operating Instructions

The Sizzix Big Shot Plus operates by creating a 'sandwich' of your chosen material, die, and cutting pads, which is then passed through the machine's rollers. The pressure from the rollers cuts or embosses your material. Always refer to the diagrams on your platforms and adapters for the correct 'sandwich' combination.

5.1. Die-Cutting Thinlits™ and Framelits™ Dies

Thinlits and Framelits dies are thin, chemically-etched dies used for intricate cuts. For these dies, you will typically use Adapter A.

  1. Place the Big Shot Plus Platform on the machine's base.
  2. Place Adapter A on top of the Platform.
  3. Place a cutting pad on Adapter A.
  4. Position your Thinlits or Framelits die (cutting side up) on the cutting pad.
  5. Place your material (e.g., cardstock, paper) over the die.
  6. Place a second cutting pad on top to complete the 'sandwich'.
  7. Feed the entire 'sandwich' through the machine by turning the handle.

5.2. Die-Cutting Bigz™ Dies

Bigz dies are thicker, steel-rule dies capable of cutting a wider range of materials, including fabric, felt, and multiple layers of paper. No adapters are typically needed for Bigz dies.

  1. Place a cutting pad on the machine's base.
  2. Place your Bigz die (cutting side up) on the cutting pad.
  3. Place your material over the die.
  4. Place a second cutting pad on top to complete the 'sandwich'.
  5. Feed the entire 'sandwich' through the machine by turning the handle.

5.3. Embossing with Textured Impressions™ Embossing Folders

Embossing folders create raised or debossed designs on materials. For Textured Impressions folders, you will typically use Adapter B.

  1. Place the Big Shot Plus Platform on the machine's base.
  2. Place Adapter B on top of the Platform.
  3. Open your embossing folder and insert your material (e.g., cardstock) inside.
  4. Place the closed embossing folder on Adapter B.
  5. Place a cutting pad on top to complete the 'sandwich'.
  6. Feed the entire 'sandwich' through the machine by turning the handle.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Sizzix Big Shot Plus machine.

  • Cleaning: Wipe the machine and accessories with a soft, dry cloth after each use to remove any material residue.
  • Cutting Pads: Cutting pads will naturally show wear and tear (scratches, indentations) over time. This is normal and does not affect performance. Rotate and flip your cutting pads regularly to distribute wear evenly. Replace them when they become excessively warped or difficult to use.
  • Storage: Store the machine and its components in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Sizzix Big Shot Plus, refer to the following common troubleshooting tips:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Material not cutting completelyIncorrect 'sandwich' combination or worn cutting pads.Ensure the correct platform/adapter combination is used for your die type. Try adding a shim (e.g., a piece of cardstock) to increase pressure. Replace worn cutting pads.
Machine is difficult to crank'Sandwich' is too thick or material is too dense.Do not force the 'sandwich' through the machine. This can damage the rollers. Reduce the thickness of your material or adjust the 'sandwich' layers.
