Setup: Installation Instructions
- Turn Off Water Supply: Locate the water supply valve at the base of the toilet and turn it clockwise until the water flow stops completely.
- Flush Toilet: Flush the toilet to drain most of the water from the tank. Hold the flush handle down to ensure as much water as possible is removed.
- Remove Remaining Water: Use a sponge or towel to remove any remaining water from the toilet tank.
- Disconnect Supply Line: Disconnect the water supply line from the bottom of the old fill valve. Have a small bucket ready to catch any residual water.
- Remove Old Fill Valve: Loosen the lock nut on the underside of the toilet tank that secures the old fill valve. Remove the old fill valve from the tank.
- Install New Fill Valve: Insert the new Fluidmaster 400ACN3P5 fill valve into the hole at the bottom of the toilet tank. Ensure the shank washer is properly seated on the outside of the tank.
- Secure Fill Valve: Hand-tighten the lock nut onto the threaded shank of the new fill valve from the underside of the tank. Do not overtighten.
- Connect Water Supply Line: Reconnect the water supply line to the bottom of the new fill valve. Hand-tighten, then use a wrench for a final quarter-turn, being careful not to overtighten.
- Attach Refill Tube: Attach one end of the refill tube to the small port on the top of the fill valve. Clip the other end of the refill tube to the overflow pipe using the refill clip, ensuring the tube is above the water level in the tank.
- Adjust Fill Valve Height (if applicable): Some Fluidmaster models allow for height adjustment. If your model has this feature, adjust the height so the critical level mark (C.L.) on the valve is at least 1 inch above the top of the overflow pipe.
- Turn On Water Supply: Slowly turn the water supply valve counter-clockwise to restore water flow to the toilet tank.
- Check for Leaks: Carefully inspect all connections for any signs of leaks. Tighten connections slightly if necessary.
- Adjust Water Level: Allow the tank to fill. The water level should stop approximately 1 inch below the top of the overflow pipe. If adjustment is needed, refer to the specific instructions for your fill valve model (often involves a screw or clip adjustment on the valve itself).
Operating Instructions
The Fluidmaster 400ACN3P5 Toilet Fill Valve operates automatically. After each flush, the valve senses the drop in water level and opens to refill the toilet tank to the preset level. Once the desired water level is reached, the valve automatically shuts off the water flow. The refill tube ensures that a small amount of water is directed into the toilet bowl during the refill cycle, maintaining the water seal in the bowl.
Maintenance
- Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect the fill valve for any signs of wear, cracks, or mineral buildup.
- Cleaning: If the valve appears to be operating slowly or making unusual noises, mineral deposits may be affecting its performance. Turn off the water supply, remove the cap of the fill valve (refer to specific model instructions for cap removal), and gently clean any visible debris or mineral buildup. Rinse with clean water.
- Check Refill Tube: Ensure the refill tube is securely attached and not kinked or obstructed.
Troubleshooting
Toilet Runs Continuously
- Water Level Too High: Adjust the fill valve to lower the water level in the tank. The water level should be about 1 inch below the top of the overflow pipe.
- Flapper Leak: Check the toilet flapper for proper sealing. A worn or misaligned flapper can cause water to leak into the bowl, making the fill valve run intermittently to refill the tank.
- Refill Tube Too Low: Ensure the refill tube is clipped above the water level in the tank and not inserted directly into the overflow pipe.
Toilet Fills Slowly or Not at All
- Water Supply Off: Ensure the water supply valve to the toilet is fully open.
- Obstructed Inlet: Turn off the water, disconnect the supply line, and check the fill valve's inlet screen for debris. Clean if necessary.
- Mineral Buildup: Follow maintenance steps to clean the fill valve mechanism.
Fill Valve Makes Noise
- Water Pressure: High water pressure can sometimes cause noise. A pressure reducing valve for the whole house might be considered.
- Loose Parts: Ensure all connections are secure but not overtightened.
- Mineral Buildup: Clean the valve as described in the maintenance section.
