Connecting the UR12

Once drivers are installed, connect the UR12 to your computer using the supplied USB cable. The unit is USB-powered when connected to a computer. Operating the UR12

Input and Output Connections

Connect your microphone to the XLR input (MIC D-PRE) and your instrument (e.g., guitar) to the HI-Z input. For monitoring, connect your headphones to the PHONES jack and your monitor speakers to the LINE OUTPUT (L/R) RCA jacks on the rear panel.

Gain Control

Use the INPUT 1 GAIN and INPUT 2 GAIN knobs to adjust the input levels for your microphone and instrument, respectively. Ensure the PEAK indicators do not light up consistently, as this indicates clipping and will result in distorted audio. The OUTPUT knob controls the overall volume for both your monitor speakers and headphones.

Direct Monitoring

Press the DIRECT MONITOR button to enable zero-latency monitoring. This allows you to hear your input signal directly through the UR12 without any delay from your computer's software, which is ideal for recording vocals or instruments.

+48V Phantom Power

If you are using a condenser microphone, activate the +48V phantom power switch on the front panel. This supplies the necessary power to the microphone. Ensure dynamic microphones do not require phantom power and should not have this engaged unless specified by the microphone manufacturer.

Software Integration

The UR12 is designed to work seamlessly with digital audio workstations (DAWs). It comes bundled with Cubase AI, a streamlined music production software. Configure your DAW to use the UR12 as its audio input and output device for optimal performance.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Steinberg UR12, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the unit. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the finish or internal components.
  • Storage: Store the unit in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high humidity.
  • Handling: Handle the unit with care. Avoid dropping it or subjecting it to strong impacts, as this can damage internal circuitry.
  • Connections: Always ensure cables are securely connected but do not force them. Disconnect cables by gripping the plug, not the cable itself.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your UR12, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemSolution
No sound output.Check all cable connections (USB, speakers, headphones). Ensure the UR12 is powered on and the OUTPUT knob is turned up. Verify the UR12 is selected as the audio output device in your computer's sound settings and DAW.
