1. Introduction
This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your ICM Controls SC5811 Multi-Stage Programmable Thermostat. Please read this manual thoroughly before installation and operation to ensure proper function and to avoid damage to the unit or property.
The SC5811 is a sophisticated programmable thermostat designed for two-stage heating/cooling or two-stage heat pump systems. It features a backlit display, flexible programming options, and auto changeover capability.
2. Safety Information
WARNING: Always turn off power to the heating/cooling system at the main fuse or circuit breaker panel before installing or servicing the thermostat. Failure to do so could result in electrical shock, property damage, or personal injury.
- Installation should be performed by a qualified technician.
- Ensure all wiring conforms to local electrical codes and ordinances.
- Do not operate the thermostat with wet hands.
- Keep out of reach of children.
3. Package Contents
Upon opening the package, verify that all components are present:
- ICM Controls SC5811 Thermostat Unit
- Mounting Hardware (screws, wall anchors)
- User Manual (this document)
4. Installation and Setup
Proper installation is crucial for the optimal performance of your thermostat. Follow these steps carefully:
- Power Off: Turn off the power to your heating and cooling system at the main circuit breaker.
- Remove Old Thermostat: Carefully remove your old thermostat from the wall. Note the wiring connections before disconnecting them. It is recommended to label each wire with the terminal it was connected to.
- Mounting: Mount the new SC5811 thermostat base plate to the wall using the provided mounting hardware. Ensure it is level.
- Wiring: Connect the wires to the corresponding terminals on the SC5811. Refer to the wiring diagram provided with the physical product for specific connections based on your HVAC system type (conventional or heat pump). The SC5811 is hardwired.
- Attach Thermostat: Secure the thermostat body to the base plate.
- Power On: Restore power to your heating and cooling system at the main circuit breaker.
- Initial Configuration: The thermostat may require initial configuration settings, such as system type (conventional/heat pump), fan operation, and temperature calibration. Refer to the on-screen prompts or the detailed instructions in the physical manual for these settings. The SimpleSet Target Programming technology assists in this process.

5. Operation
5.1. Basic Controls
- System Mode (SYS): Press this button to cycle through system modes: OFF, HEAT, COOL, AUTO.
- Fan Mode (FAN): Press this button to cycle through fan modes: AUTO (fan runs only when heating/cooling) or ON (fan runs continuously).
- Temperature Adjustment: Use the UP/DOWN arrow buttons (typically located next to the display) to adjust the desired temperature setpoint.
5.2. Programming
The SC5811 offers flexible programming options: 7-Day, 5-2-Day, and 5-1-1-Day programming. This allows you to set different temperature schedules for weekdays and weekends, or for each day individually.
- Enter Program Mode: Locate the "PROG" button or menu option on your thermostat. Press it to enter programming mode.
- Select Day/Period: Use the navigation buttons to select the day of the week and the time period (e.g., Wake, Leave, Return, Sleep) you wish to program.
- Set Temperature: Adjust the temperature setpoint for the selected period using the UP/DOWN arrows.
- Save and Exit: Follow the on-screen prompts to save your settings and exit programming mode. The thermostat features permanent memory, retaining your settings even during power outages.
5.3. Auto Changeover
When set to AUTO mode, the thermostat will automatically switch between heating and cooling to maintain your desired temperature range, eliminating the need for manual mode changes.
6. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Wipe the thermostat's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Air Filter: Regularly check and replace your HVAC system's air filter as recommended by the system manufacturer. A dirty filter can restrict airflow and affect thermostat performance.
- Thermal Intrusion Barrier: The patented Thermal Intrusion Barrier helps maintain accurate temperature readings. Ensure the area around the thermostat is free from obstructions that could affect airflow or temperature sensing.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Thermostat display is blank. | No power to the thermostat. | Check circuit breaker. Ensure wiring is correct and secure. |
| System not heating/cooling. | Incorrect system mode; temperature setpoint not met; HVAC system issue. | Verify system mode (HEAT/COOL/AUTO). Adjust setpoint. Check HVAC system for power or error codes. |
| Programming lost after power outage. | (Note: SC5811 has permanent memory. If this occurs, it may indicate a fault.) | Reprogram the thermostat. If issue persists, contact technical support. |
| Temperature readings seem inaccurate. | Thermostat location affected by drafts, direct sunlight, or heat sources. | Ensure thermostat is not exposed to drafts, direct sunlight, or heat-emitting appliances. |
