Introduction
The Kato 22-101 Sound Box is a dedicated unit designed to enhance your N-gauge model train experience by adding realistic railroad sound effects. This device synchronizes various sounds, such as engine speed, with the operation of your model train. It features a slot for interchangeable sound cards, allowing for different types of train sounds. This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your Sound Box.

Setup
- Power Connection: Connect the Sound Box between your Kato power pack and the model train track. The Sound Box receives power from the power pack and outputs it to the track.
- Sound Card Insertion: Carefully insert the desired sound card into the dedicated slot on the Sound Box. Ensure it is fully seated. The unit typically comes with a Steam sound card.
- External Connections (Optional):
- Microphone Input: If you wish to broadcast announcements, connect a microphone to the "MIC" input.
- Line Out: For enhanced audio, connect headphones or amplified external speakers to the "LINE OUT" jack. Note that using the line out will disable the internal speaker.
- Non-Kato Controllers: If using a non-Kato brand controller, an inexpensive adapter cable may be required to ensure compatibility and proper functionality.

Operating Instructions
- Power On: Ensure your power pack is connected and turned on. The Sound Box will power on automatically.
- Throttle Synchronization: The Sound Box automatically synchronizes engine sounds with the throttle input from your controller. As you increase or decrease the throttle, the engine speed sounds will adjust accordingly.
- Function Buttons: Use the numbered function buttons (1-6) on the Sound Box to trigger various specific sound effects, such as whistles, horns, or braking sounds, depending on the inserted sound card.
- Volume Control: Adjust the "VOLUME" knob to set the desired sound level.
- MIC Input Usage: If a microphone is connected, speak into it to broadcast announcements through the Sound Box speaker or connected external speakers.
- Sound Card Exchange: To change the type of train sounds, gently eject the current sound card and insert a different one.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Keep the Sound Box clean and free from dust. Pay particular attention to the speaker cone, which is exposed. Use a soft, dry cloth or a gentle air blower to remove dust. Avoid touching the speaker cone directly to prevent damage.
- Sound Card Handling: When inserting or removing sound cards, do so gently to avoid damaging the card or the slot connectors. Store unused sound cards in a protective case.
- Storage: Store the Sound Box in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures when not in use.
Troubleshooting
- No Sound: Ensure the Sound Box is properly connected between the power pack and the track, and that a locomotive is present on the track. The unit will not produce sound without a track connection and a locomotive.
- Incorrect Sounds: Verify that the correct sound card for your desired train type is properly inserted.
- Sound Quality Issues: If using external speakers, ensure they are amplified if necessary. Check all cable connections for secure fit.
- Compatibility Issues: If using a non-Kato controller and experiencing issues, confirm that you have the correct adapter cable for universal compatibility.
- Synchronization Problems: If engine sounds are not synchronizing correctly with the throttle, ensure the SYNC button is pressed or refer to the specific instructions for your sound card.
