4. Setup

The Hoyer Advance lift is designed for quick setup, often arriving mostly assembled. Follow these steps to prepare the lift for initial use:

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove the lift from its packaging. While manageable, assistance may be beneficial due to its size.
  2. Unfolding: If the lift is in its folded position, gently unfold the mast and boom until they lock into place. Ensure all locking mechanisms are securely engaged.
  3. Battery Installation/Charging: The lift requires one 12V battery (included). Ensure the battery is properly connected. For initial use, fully charge the battery. Connect the charger to the control box and a power outlet. The lift will not operate while charging.
  4. Initial Checks: Before first use, perform a visual inspection for any signs of damage or loose components. Test the emergency stop button and the up/down functions of the boom without a patient.

5. Operating Instructions

Operating the Hoyer Advance lift involves several key steps to ensure a safe and comfortable transfer for the patient.

5.1 Controls and Indicators

5.2 Base Adjustment

The lift features swan legs and an adjuster pedal to control the width of the base, allowing access around wheelchairs and furniture.

5.3 Sling Attachment

5.4 Patient Transfer

Always ensure the patient is calm and cooperative during transfer. Communicate clearly throughout the process.

  1. Positioning: Position the lift over the patient, ensuring the base legs are adjusted for optimal access and stability. Lock the caster wheels.
  2. Attach Sling: Securely attach the sling to the spreader bar.
  3. Lift Patient: Using the remote control, slowly raise the patient a few inches off the surface. Pause to check sling attachment and patient comfort.
  4. Maneuver: Unlock the caster wheels. Use the oversized handle and push pad to carefully maneuver the lift to the destination. Guide the lift smoothly, avoiding sudden movements.
  5. Lower Patient: Position the patient over the target surface (bed, chair). Lock the caster wheels. Slowly lower the patient until they are securely seated.
  6. Remove Sling: Once the patient is safely transferred, detach the sling from the spreader bar.
