5. Setup and Installation

5.1 Placement

Select an outdoor location that is protected from direct heavy rain and allows the photocell sensor to accurately detect natural ambient light. Avoid areas where artificial light sources (e.g., porch lights, streetlights) might shine directly onto the sensor, as this can interfere with its operation. Mount the timer vertically with the outlets facing downwards to ensure proper drainage and weather resistance.

5.2 Mounting

The HB51K is designed for plug-in mounting. A hanging tab is provided on the back of the unit for secure attachment to a screw or hook, if desired, after plugging it into a suitable outdoor receptacle.

5.3 Connecting Devices

  1. Ensure the timer's rotary dial is set to the OFF position.
  2. Plug the timer's 3-prong cord into a grounded, GFCI-protected outdoor electrical receptacle.
  3. Plug your outdoor electrical devices (e.g., lights, pumps) into the two 3-prong receptacles located at the bottom of the timer.
  4. Verify that the total load of all connected devices does not exceed 8 Amps or 1000 Watts.

6. Operation

6.1 Rotary Dial Settings

The Intermatic HB51K features a rotary dial to select the desired operating mode. Rotate the dial to align the indicator arrow with your chosen setting.

6.2 Photocell Sensor

The integrated photocell sensor detects ambient light levels to activate the timer's dusk-related functions. For optimal performance, ensure the sensor is not obstructed by objects or exposed to direct artificial light sources at night.

6.3 LED Power Indicator

A red LED light labeled 'POWER' on the front of the unit illuminates when the timer is receiving electrical power. This indicates the unit is operational.
