Figure 1: Front Panel of NetVanta 3140 Router
This image displays the front panel of the ADTRAN NetVanta 3140 router. From left to right, it shows status LEDs (STAT, USB), three Gigabit Ethernet ports labeled GIG 0/1, GIG 0/2, and GIG 0/3, two USB ports, and a CONSOLE port (DB9 serial connector). The ADTRAN logo is visible on the left, and "NetVanta 3140" is printed on the right.
Front Panel Components:
- STAT LED: Indicates system status.
- USB LED: Indicates USB activity.
- GIG 0/1, GIG 0/2, GIG 0/3 Ports: Three autosensing Gigabit Ethernet interfaces for network connections.
- USB Ports: For connecting compatible USB devices.
- CONSOLE Port: A DB9 serial port for local management and configuration via a terminal emulator.
Setup
1. Placement
Place the NetVanta 3140 on a flat, stable surface or install it in a standard 19-inch equipment rack (rack-mounting hardware not included). Ensure adequate ventilation and avoid placing the device near heat sources or in direct sunlight.
2. Power Connection
- Connect the provided power adapter to the power input on the rear panel of the router.
- Plug the other end of the power adapter into a suitable electrical outlet.
- The device will power on automatically. Observe the STAT LED for boot-up sequence.
3. Network Connections
- Connect your Internet service provider's (ISP) modem or network uplink to one of the Gigabit Ethernet ports (e.g., GIG 0/1).
- Connect your local area network (LAN) devices (e.g., computers, switches) to the remaining Gigabit Ethernet ports.
- Ensure all Ethernet cables are securely connected.
4. Initial Configuration (Console Access)
For initial configuration or advanced management, connect a computer to the CONSOLE port using a serial cable (DB9). Use a terminal emulation program (e.g., PuTTY, Tera Term) with the following settings:
- Baud Rate: 9600
- Data Bits: 8
- Parity: None
- Stop Bits: 1
- Flow Control: None
Refer to the ADTRAN OS documentation for detailed command-line interface (CLI) configuration instructions.
Operating Instructions
System Boot-up
Upon power-on, the router will perform a self-test and load the ADTRAN OS. The STAT LED will blink during this process and become solid green once the system is operational.
LED Indicators
| LED | Status | Description |
|---|---|---|
| STAT | Solid Green | System operational. |
| Blinking Green | System booting or performing self-test. | |
| Off | No power or system failure. | |
| USB | Solid Green | USB device connected and active. |
| Blinking Green | USB data transfer in progress. | |
| Off | No USB device connected or inactive. | |
| GIG Ports (Link/Activity) | Solid Green | Link established. |
| Blinking Green | Data activity. | |
| Off | No link or no activity. |
Basic Network Operation
Once configured, the NetVanta 3140 will route traffic between its Gigabit Ethernet interfaces according to its configuration. It supports features such as Quality of Service (QoS) for prioritizing traffic and Voice over IP (VoIP) readiness for voice services.
Maintenance
Firmware Updates
Periodically check the ADTRAN support website for firmware updates. Keeping the router's firmware up-to-date ensures optimal performance, security, and access to new features. Follow the instructions provided with the firmware update package carefully.
Cleaning
To clean the device, power it off and disconnect the power adapter. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners, as they may damage the device.
Environmental Considerations
Ensure the operating environment remains within specified temperature and humidity ranges to prevent damage and ensure reliable operation.
Troubleshooting
No Power
- Verify the power adapter is securely connected to both the router and a working electrical outlet.
- Check if the power outlet is functional by plugging in another device.
- Ensure the power adapter is the correct one supplied with the device.
No Network Connectivity
- Check the Ethernet cable connections to the GIG ports. Ensure they are firmly seated.
- Observe the GIG port LEDs. If they are off, there might be no link. Try a different cable or port.
- Verify the configuration of the router using the console port.
- Restart the router and connected network devices.
Console Access Issues
- Ensure the serial cable is correctly connected to the CONSOLE port and your computer.
- Verify the terminal emulation software settings (baud rate, data bits, parity, stop bits, flow control) match the recommended settings.
- Check if the correct COM port is selected in your terminal software.
