5. Setup

5.1. Battery Installation

Each Retevis RT628 Walkie Talkie requires 3 AA batteries (not included). To install batteries:

  1. Remove the belt clip by pulling it upwards.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit.
  3. Gently slide the cover downwards to open the compartment.
  4. Insert 3 AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  5. Replace the battery compartment cover and reattach the belt clip.

5.2. Power On/Off

To power on the walkie talkie, press and hold the ON/OFF button until the LCD screen illuminates. To power off, press and hold the same button until the screen turns off.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1. Basic Communication

For two or more walkie talkies to communicate, they must be set to the same channel and CTCSS (sub-channel code).

  1. Turn On: Press and hold the power button on both walkie talkies.
  2. Set Channel: Press the MENU button once. The channel number will flash. Use the UP/DOWN buttons to select your desired channel (1-22). Press the PTT button to confirm.
  3. Set CTCSS: Press the MENU button twice. The CTCSS number will flash. Use the UP/DOWN buttons to select your desired sub-code. Press the PTT button to confirm. Ensure all devices are on the same channel and CTCSS.
  4. Talk: Press and hold the PTT button on the side of the walkie talkie to speak. Release the PTT button to listen.

6.2. VOX Hands-Free Function

The VOX (Voice Operated Exchange) function allows you to transmit without pressing the PTT button. To activate VOX:

  1. Press the MENU button four times until the VOX icon appears on the screen.
  2. Use the UP/DOWN buttons to select the VOX sensitivity level (1-3, with 3 being most sensitive).
  3. Press the PTT button to confirm. A small icon in the bottom right corner of the screen indicates VOX hands-free mode is active.

To prevent accidental channel changes or setting adjustments, you can lock the keypad:

If you experience persistent issues, you can reset the walkie talkie to its factory default settings (Channel 1, CTCSS 0):

  1. Turn off the walkie talkie by pressing and holding the power button.
  2. Remove the back clip and battery cover, then remove all batteries.
  3. While pressing and holding the POWER button, reinstall the batteries, battery cover, and back clip. You will hear a beep, indicating the walkie talkie has been reset and turned on.
