4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation (Sender)

The Sender unit requires a 9V battery for operation. Follow these steps to install the battery:

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the Sender unit.
  2. Use a small screwdriver to open the battery compartment cover.
  3. Insert a new 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity (+ and -).
  4. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw.

4.2 Initial Checks

Before use, ensure both the Receiver and Sender units are clean and free from damage. Verify that the batteries are correctly installed and have sufficient charge.

5. Operating Instructions

The Gain Express Automotive Circuit Tester is designed for ease of use. This section outlines the general operation and specific applications.

5.1 General Operation

  1. Receiver Power On/Off and Sensitivity: Turn the rotary switch on the Receiver to the 'ON' position. Adjust the sensitivity using the same rotary switch to optimize signal detection based on the environment and wire depth.
  2. Sender Mode Selection: Use the switch on the Sender to select between 'TONE' for wire tracing or 'CONT' for continuity testing. The 'OFF' position powers down the Sender.
  3. Test Button (Receiver): Press the 'TEST' button on the Receiver to activate the probe and listen for the audible tone.

5.2 Wire Tracing

To trace a wire or cable without damaging its insulation:

  1. Connect the Sender's red test lead to the wire you wish to trace and the black test lead to a good ground point (e.g., vehicle chassis). Set the Sender switch to 'TONE'.
  2. Turn on the Receiver and adjust its sensitivity.
  3. Scan the area where the wire is located with the Receiver's flexible probe. The Receiver will emit an audible tone when it detects the signal from the Sender.
  4. Follow the tone to trace the path of the wire. For optimal results, position the receiver's probe tip perpendicular (at 90 degrees) to the wire being traced.
Diagram illustrating wire tracing and open circuit locating. For wire tracing, the Sender is connected to a fuse socket or connector, and the Receiver follows the wire path. For open circuit locating, the Sender is connected to the wire, and the Receiver detects where the signal stops.

Image showing the correct and incorrect way to position the flexible probe for wire tracing. The correct method shows the probe perpendicular to the wire, while the incorrect method shows it parallel.

Figure 5.3: Proper positioning of the flexible probe for accurate tracing.

5.3 Locating Open Circuits

To find an open circuit (break) in a wire:

  1. Connect the Sender's red test lead to the suspected wire and the black test lead to a good ground. Set the Sender switch to 'TONE'.
  2. Trace the wire with the Receiver as described in Section 5.2.
  3. The audible tone from the Receiver will stop or significantly weaken at the point of the open circuit.

5.4 Checking Short Circuits

To identify a short circuit:

  1. Disconnect the suspected circuit from its power source.
  2. Connect the Sender's red test lead to one end of the suspected wire and the black test lead to a good ground. Set the Sender switch to 'CONT'.
  3. Use the Receiver to scan along the wire. A continuous tone indicates continuity. If the tone stops abruptly, it may indicate a short to ground or a break in the wire.
  4. Alternatively, connect the Sender across the suspected shorted circuit. If the Sender's continuity LED illuminates, a short exists. Then use the Receiver to pinpoint the exact location of the short by following the signal.

6. Safety Information

Always adhere to safety precautions when working with electrical systems to prevent injury or damage to the vehicle and the tool.

  • This tool operates on DC voltages not exceeding 42 volts. Do not use it on AC voltage or circuits exceeding 42V DC.
  • The tool is internally protected against power surges and overloads, but misuse can still cause damage.
  • Always disconnect the vehicle's battery before working on electrical components, unless specifically instructed otherwise for a test.
  • Avoid contact with moving parts of the engine or hot surfaces.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and gloves.
  • Do not use the tool if it appears damaged or malfunctioning.

7. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and reliability of your circuit tester.

  • Cleaning: Wipe the units with a soft, dry cloth after each use. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the tool in its carrying pouch in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace batteries promptly when the indicator lights dim or the tool's performance degrades. Remove batteries if the tool will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your circuit tester, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible Solution
No tone from ReceiverCheck Receiver battery. Ensure Sender is ON and set to 'TONE'. Verify Sender battery. Check connections. Adjust Receiver sensitivity.
Weak or inconsistent toneIncrease Receiver sensitivity. Replace Sender battery. Ensure good ground connection. Reposition probe perpendicular to wire.
Sender continuity LED not lighting upCheck Sender battery. Ensure good connection to the circuit. Verify circuit is not open.
