3. Setup
The STANLEY FATMAX Autolock Tape Measure is ready for use directly out of its packaging. No assembly or battery installation is required.
- Unpack: Carefully remove the tape measure from its packaging.
- Inspect: Before first use, inspect the blade and case for any signs of damage. Ensure the blade extends and retracts smoothly.
- Attach Belt Clip (Optional): The integrated belt clip allows for convenient carrying. Securely attach the tape measure to your belt or pocket.
4. Operating Instructions
The Autolock feature simplifies measuring by holding the blade in place once extended.

- Retracting the Blade:
To retract the blade, press the red button located on the top of the case. This disengages the Autolock, allowing the blade to smoothly return into the case. Control the retraction speed by maintaining light pressure on the blade or the button to prevent rapid snap-back.
- Using the Tru-Zero End Hook:
The end hook is designed to slide slightly to ensure accurate measurements for both inside and outside edges. For outside measurements, hook the blade onto the edge of the object. For inside measurements, push the hook against the inside surface. The hook's movement compensates for its own thickness.

- Using Detachable Hooks (if included):
If your model includes detachable magnetic or XL hooks, these can be attached to the end of the blade for specialized measuring tasks. Ensure they are securely fastened before use.

- Measuring Long Distances:
The wide blade and strong standout (up to 3.4 meters) allow for easier single-person measurements. For longer distances, ensure the blade is supported to prevent bending or kinking.

5. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Wipe the blade and case with a damp cloth to remove dust and debris. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Drying: If the tape measure gets wet, extend the blade fully and allow it to air dry completely before retracting to prevent rust and maintain smooth operation.
- Storage: Store the tape measure in a dry place, away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
- Blade Inspection: Regularly check the blade for kinks, tears, or excessive wear. A damaged blade can affect accuracy and safety.
6. Troubleshooting
- Blade does not retract smoothly:
Check for debris inside the case or on the blade. Clean as per maintenance instructions. If the issue persists, the internal spring mechanism may be worn or damaged. Contact customer support.
- Autolock not engaging:
Ensure the blade is pulled out with sufficient force for the mechanism to engage. If the autolock feature is consistently failing, the internal locking components may require inspection. Contact customer support.
- Inaccurate measurements:
Verify that the Tru-Zero end hook is functioning correctly and moving freely. Ensure the blade is flat against the surface being measured. If accuracy issues persist, the tape measure may be damaged or worn beyond its Class II accuracy rating.
