2. Product Features

  • Autolock Technology: The blade automatically locks in position when extended, eliminating the need for a manual lock button during measurement.
  • Ergonomic Bi-Material Case: Provides enhanced grip and comfort, reducing fatigue during prolonged use.
  • Mylar Coated Blade: Offers up to 10 times more resistance to abrasion and wear compared to standard lacquered blades, extending product lifespan.
  • Blade Armor Coating: Applied to the first 80 mm of the blade for double the blade life, protecting the most frequently used section.
  • Wide 32 mm Blade: Facilitates easy reading of measurements and improves blade standout up to 3.4 meters, enabling single-person measurements over longer distances.
  • Tru-Zero End Hook: Designed to move to compensate for both inside and outside measurements, ensuring accurate readings.
  • Three-Rivet Hook: 40 percent stronger than a two-rivet hook, providing increased durability and secure attachment.
  • Detachable Hook Feature: Includes detachable magnetic and XL hooks for improved versatility and efficiency in various measuring scenarios.

3. Setup

The STANLEY FATMAX Autolock Tape Measure is ready for use directly out of its packaging. No assembly or battery installation is required.

  1. Unpack: Carefully remove the tape measure from its packaging.
  2. Inspect: Before first use, inspect the blade and case for any signs of damage. Ensure the blade extends and retracts smoothly.
  3. Attach Belt Clip (Optional): The integrated belt clip allows for convenient carrying. Securely attach the tape measure to your belt or pocket.

4. Operating Instructions

The Autolock feature simplifies measuring by holding the blade in place once extended.

  1. Extending the Blade:

Grasp the tape measure firmly. Pull the blade out from the case to the desired length. The Autolock mechanism will engage automatically, holding the blade in position.

  2. Retracting the Blade:

To retract the blade, press the red button located on the top of the case. This disengages the Autolock, allowing the blade to smoothly return into the case. Control the retraction speed by maintaining light pressure on the blade or the button to prevent rapid snap-back.

  3. Using the Tru-Zero End Hook:

The end hook is designed to slide slightly to ensure accurate measurements for both inside and outside edges. For outside measurements, hook the blade onto the edge of the object. For inside measurements, push the hook against the inside surface. The hook's movement compensates for its own thickness.

  4. Using Detachable Hooks (if included):

If your model includes detachable magnetic or XL hooks, these can be attached to the end of the blade for specialized measuring tasks. Ensure they are securely fastened before use.

  5. Measuring Long Distances:

The wide blade and strong standout (up to 3.4 meters) allow for easier single-person measurements. For longer distances, ensure the blade is supported to prevent bending or kinking.

5. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the blade and case with a damp cloth to remove dust and debris. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Drying: If the tape measure gets wet, extend the blade fully and allow it to air dry completely before retracting to prevent rust and maintain smooth operation.
  • Storage: Store the tape measure in a dry place, away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
  • Blade Inspection: Regularly check the blade for kinks, tears, or excessive wear. A damaged blade can affect accuracy and safety.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Blade does not retract smoothly:

Check for debris inside the case or on the blade. Clean as per maintenance instructions. If the issue persists, the internal spring mechanism may be worn or damaged. Contact customer support.

  • Autolock not engaging:

Ensure the blade is pulled out with sufficient force for the mechanism to engage. If the autolock feature is consistently failing, the internal locking components may require inspection. Contact customer support.

  • Inaccurate measurements:

Verify that the Tru-Zero end hook is functioning correctly and moving freely. Ensure the blade is flat against the surface being measured. If accuracy issues persist, the tape measure may be damaged or worn beyond its Class II accuracy rating.
