2. Installation

Recommended Placement:

For optimal safety, install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including basements and in every bedroom. Consider placing additional alarms in hallways and living areas. Avoid placing alarms in kitchens, bathrooms, or garages where steam, cooking fumes, or vehicle exhaust might cause nuisance alarms.

3. Operation

Testing the Alarm:

It is crucial to test your smoke alarm weekly to ensure it is functioning correctly. Press and hold the Test/Silence button on the alarm's cover until the alarm sounds. The alarm will emit a loud, piercing sound. Release the button to stop the test. If the alarm does not sound, refer to the Troubleshooting section.

Silence Feature:

In case of a nuisance alarm (e.g., from cooking fumes), you can temporarily silence the alarm by quickly pressing the Test/Silence button. The alarm will remain silent for approximately 10 minutes before automatically resetting. If smoke is still present after the silence period, the alarm will reactivate.

End-of-Life Warning:

The PR710 is designed to operate for 10 years. After approximately 10 years from activation, the alarm will begin to chirp periodically (typically once per minute) to indicate that it has reached the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced. This chirping cannot be silenced permanently and signifies that the entire unit must be replaced.

4. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the continued reliability of your smoke alarm.

Cleaning:

Clean your smoke alarm at least once a month. Gently vacuum or use clean, compressed air to remove accumulated dust from the alarm's cover and vents. Do not use water, cleaners, or solvents, as these can damage the unit. If the alarm is installed in a dusty environment, clean it more frequently.

Battery:

The First Alert PR710 features a sealed 10-year lithium-ion battery that is not replaceable. The alarm is designed to provide continuous power for its entire 10-year lifespan. Do not attempt to open the alarm or replace the battery, as this will void the warranty and may damage the unit.
