4. Product Overview

The YN-14EX consists of a controller unit and a ring flash unit.

4.1 Controller Unit

The controller unit houses the batteries, LCD display, and control buttons. It mounts onto your camera's hot shoe.

4.2 Ring Flash Unit

The ring flash unit attaches to the front of your camera lens via an adapter ring. It features two flash tubes (A and B) and LED AF assist lamps.

5. Setup

5.1 Battery Installation

  1. Open the battery compartment cover on the controller unit.
  2. Insert four AA-size batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  3. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

5.2 Attaching Adapter Rings

Select the appropriate adapter ring (52mm, 58mm, 67mm, or 72mm) that matches your camera lens filter thread size. Screw the adapter ring onto the front of your camera lens.

5.3 Mounting the Ring Flash Unit

Attach the ring flash unit to the adapter ring on your lens. Ensure it is securely fastened.

5.4 Mounting the Controller Unit

Slide the controller unit onto your camera's hot shoe. Tighten the locking wheel to secure it in place. Connect the coiled cable from the ring flash unit to the controller unit.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Power On/Off

Press the ON/OFF button on the controller unit to power the flash on or off.

6.2 Flash Modes (TTL/M)

Press the MODE button to switch between TTL (Through-The-Lens) and M (Manual) flash modes.

  • TTL Mode: The flash output is automatically controlled by the camera's metering system.
  • Manual Mode: You can manually set the flash output level (7 levels of output control, 19 levels of fine tuning).

6.3 Flash Ratio Control (A/B Tubes)

The YN-14EX allows independent control over the output of flash tubes A and B. This enables creative lighting effects, such as creating shadows for a sculptural effect. Use the RATIO button and navigation controls to adjust the ratio.

6.4 Advanced Functions

The YN-14EX supports various advanced functions accessible through the camera's menu (for Canon cameras) or the flash unit's controls:

  • Exposure Compensation (FEC): Adjust flash output to fine-tune exposure.
  • Flash Exposure Bracketing (FEB): Automatically takes three shots at different flash exposures.
  • Rear-Curtain Sync: Fires the flash just before the second curtain closes, creating motion blur behind the subject.
  • Flash Exposure Lock (FE Lock): Locks the flash exposure for a specific area.
  • Custom Functions (Fn): Personalize flash settings.
  • LED AF Assist Lamp: Provides auxiliary light for autofocus in low-light conditions.

  • PC Sync Port: Standard 2.5mm PC synchronous interface for wired triggering.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the flash unit. For stubborn dirt, use a slightly damp cloth and then dry thoroughly. Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners.
  • Battery Care: Always remove batteries when the flash is not in use for extended periods. Store batteries in a cool, dry place.
  • Storage: Store the flash unit in its protective bag in a cool, dry, and dust-free environment.
