Setup & Installation
Installing the Samsung 850 EVO SSD involves connecting it to your computer's motherboard and power supply.
Required Components (Not Included)
- SATA Data Cable
- SATA Power Cable (from your power supply)
- 2.5-inch to 3.5-inch mounting bracket (for desktop PCs, if your case does not have 2.5-inch bays)
- Spacer (for some laptops, if the SSD is thinner than the original drive)
Installation Steps
- Prepare your system: Power off your computer and disconnect all cables. Open the computer case or access the drive bay in your laptop.
- Mount the SSD: Secure the 2.5-inch SSD into an available drive bay. For desktop PCs, a mounting bracket may be required to fit into a 3.5-inch bay.
- Connect Cables: Connect one end of the SATA data cable to the SSD and the other end to an available SATA port on your motherboard. Connect a SATA power cable from your power supply to the SSD.
- Close and Power On: Close your computer case, reconnect all cables, and power on your system.
- Initialize and Format: Once the computer boots, you may need to initialize and format the new SSD through your operating system's Disk Management utility before it can be used. Refer to your operating system's documentation for detailed instructions.

Software
Samsung provides complimentary software to manage and optimize your SSD:
- Samsung Data Migration Software: For easy transfer of your existing operating system and data from your old drive to the new Samsung SSD.
- Samsung Magician Software: For monitoring drive health, optimizing performance, and managing firmware updates.
These software tools can be downloaded from the official Samsung website.

Maintenance
- Firmware Updates: Regularly check for and install the latest firmware updates using the Samsung Magician software to ensure optimal performance and stability.
- TRIM Support: Ensure TRIM is enabled in your operating system. TRIM helps maintain the performance of your SSD over time by allowing the operating system to inform the SSD which data blocks are no longer in use and can be wiped.
- Avoid Defragmentation: Unlike traditional hard disk drives, SSDs do not benefit from defragmentation. Defragmenting an SSD can reduce its lifespan.
- Over-provisioning: Consider utilizing the over-provisioning feature in Samsung Magician to allocate a small percentage of the drive's capacity for internal management, which can improve endurance and sustained performance.
Troubleshooting
- SSD Not Detected:
- Check all SATA data and power cable connections to ensure they are secure.
- Verify that the SATA port on the motherboard is enabled in the BIOS/UEFI settings.
- Ensure the SSD is properly initialized and formatted in Disk Management (Windows) or Disk Utility (macOS).
- Slow Performance:
- Confirm that the SSD is connected to a SATA 6Gb/s port on your motherboard.
- Ensure AHCI mode is enabled in your BIOS/UEFI settings.
- Update the SSD firmware using Samsung Magician.
- Check if TRIM is enabled.
- Operating System Installation Issues:
- Ensure your installation media (USB drive or DVD) is bootable and correctly configured.
- Verify BIOS/UEFI boot order prioritizes your installation media.
- If migrating data, ensure the source drive is healthy and the migration software completes successfully.
