1. Introduction

The IK Multimedia iRig Pads is an ultra-portable MIDI pad controller and groove production station designed for use with iOS devices, Mac, and PC. Its compact and lightweight design allows musicians and producers to create beats, launch loops, play instruments, and perform as a DJ anywhere, anytime. Featuring 16 velocity-sensitive backlit rubber pads, two MIDI knobs, one slider, and a pushbutton rotary encoder, the iRig Pads offers extensive control and flexibility for various music production tasks.

2. What's in the Box

Upon unboxing your iRig Pads, please ensure all the following components are present:

• IK Multimedia iRig Pads unit
• Lightning connector cable
• USB cable
• (Note: 30-pin cable sold separately)

3. Setup

Setting up your iRig Pads is straightforward. Follow these steps to connect your device and begin creating:

1. Power Connection: The iRig Pads is powered directly by your connected device (iOS, Mac, or PC) via the Lightning or USB cable. No external power supply is typically needed for basic operation.
2. Device Connection:
   • For iOS Devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch): Use the included Lightning connector cable to connect the iRig Pads to your iOS device.
   • For Mac/PC: Use the included USB cable to connect the iRig Pads to a USB port on your computer.
3. Software Installation: While iRig Pads works out of the box with many MIDI applications, for full functionality and access to bundled software, download and install the latest drivers and companion applications (such as SampleTank FREE, SampleTank 2L, GrooveMaker, DJ Rig) from the IK Multimedia website.
4. Foot Pedal (Optional): If desired, connect a 1/4-inch foot pedal (sustain or expression) to the dedicated jack on the iRig Pads for additional control.

4. Operating the iRig Pads

The iRig Pads is designed for intuitive control over your music software. Here's an overview of its main features and how to use them:

• 16 Velocity-Sensitive Backlit Rubber Pads: These pads are the core of the iRig Pads. They respond to how hard you hit them (velocity-sensitive) and light up in three different colors, indicating the velocity or in response to incoming MIDI messages. Use them to trigger drums, samples, loops, and play virtual instruments.
• MIDI Knobs (x2), Slider (x1), and Pushbutton Rotary Encoder (x1): These controls are fully programmable. They can be assigned to control various parameters within your music software, such as volume, effects, filter cutoff, or any other MIDI-assignable function. Refer to your software's documentation for MIDI mapping instructions.
• Scene Buttons: The iRig Pads features 16 user-programmable scenes. A scene is a saved configuration of all the pad, knob, and slider assignments. This allows for instant recall of different setups for various songs or performance scenarios.
  • To enter edit mode for programming, press the "Scene" and "Fix Velocity" buttons simultaneously. The pads will light up to guide you through the programming steps.
  • Save your custom setups as "Scenes" and assign them to individual pads for quick access.
• Fixed Velocity Button: This button allows you to toggle between velocity-sensitive pad response and a fixed velocity level, ensuring consistent sound output regardless of how hard you strike the pads.
• Compatibility: The iRig Pads is compatible with a wide range of MIDI applications on iOS, Mac, and PC. It integrates seamlessly with IK Multimedia's own apps like SampleTank, GrooveMaker, and DJ Rig, enhancing your creative workflow.

5. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your iRig Pads, follow these maintenance guidelines:

• Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the surface of the iRig Pads. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth can be used, but ensure no moisture enters the device. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
• Storage: Store the iRig Pads in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high humidity. When transporting, use a protective case or bag to prevent damage to the pads and controls.
• Cable Care: Handle connection cables with care. Avoid sharp bends, kinks, or excessive pulling, which can damage the internal wires.
• Avoid Liquids: Keep the iRig Pads away from liquids. Spills can cause severe damage to the internal electronics.
