General Safety Information
Always observe basic safety precautions to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and personal injury. Keep this manual for future reference.
- Work Area Safety: Keep the work area clean and well-lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
- Electrical Safety: Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
- Personal Safety: Always wear eye protection. Use hearing protection when operating the tool for extended periods. Wear a dust mask in dusty conditions.
- Tool Use and Care: Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. A correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
- Battery Tool Use and Care: Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer. A charger that is suitable for one type of battery pack may create a risk of fire when used with another battery pack.

3. Installing Drill Bits (Quick-Change Chuck)
The tool features a quick-change chuck for SDS-PLUS bits and a separate quick-change chuck for cylindrical drill bits.
- For SDS-PLUS bits: Pull back the chuck sleeve, insert the SDS-PLUS bit until it clicks into place, then release the sleeve. Pull on the bit to ensure it is securely locked.
- For cylindrical bits: Remove the SDS-PLUS quick-change chuck by pulling back the sleeve and pulling the chuck off. Attach the cylindrical quick-change chuck (Art. 194079-2) in the same manner. Insert the cylindrical bit and tighten the chuck jaws.

Operating Instructions
1. Mode Selection
The DHR243RTJ offers three operating modes: Rotation Only, Rotation with Hammering, and Hammering Only (Chiseling).
- Rotation Only (Drilling): For drilling in wood, metal, or plastic. Set the mode selector to the drill icon.
- Rotation with Hammering (Hammer Drilling): For drilling in concrete, masonry, or stone. Set the mode selector to the hammer drill icon.
- Hammering Only (Chiseling): For light chiseling or breaking work. Set the mode selector to the chisel icon.
Always ensure the tool is switched off before changing modes.
2. Starting and Stopping the Tool
- To start the tool, pull the trigger switch. The speed increases with increased trigger pressure.
- To stop the tool, release the trigger switch.
- The tool features a lock-on button for continuous operation. To engage, pull the trigger and press the lock-on button. To release, pull the trigger fully again.
3. Drilling and Chiseling Techniques
- Drilling: Apply steady, even pressure. Do not force the tool. Allow the tool to do the work.
- Hammer Drilling: The hammering action assists in penetrating hard materials. Maintain a firm grip and allow the tool to impact.
- Chiseling: Position the chisel at the desired angle. Use the tool's weight and hammering action to break material. The tool offers 40 chisel adjustment positions for optimal working angles.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the lifespan of your tool.
- Cleaning: Keep the tool's ventilation openings clean to prevent overheating. Wipe the tool body with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Chuck Maintenance: Periodically clean the chuck to remove dust and debris. Apply a small amount of grease to the SDS-PLUS shank of bits to ensure smooth operation and reduce wear.
- Battery Care: Store batteries in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not store fully discharged batteries for extended periods.
- Inspection: Regularly inspect the tool for any signs of damage, loose screws, or worn parts. If any damage is found, have the tool serviced by an authorized Makita service center.
- The brushless motor requires no brush replacement, reducing routine maintenance.
