2. Important Safety Information

Read all instructions carefully before installation and operation. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, serious injury, or death.

  • Electrical Safety: Always disconnect power to the pump before performing any maintenance or service. Ensure the pump is connected to a properly grounded electrical outlet with a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). Do not operate the pump with a damaged cord or plug.
  • Water and Electrical: Never handle the pump or its power cord with wet hands or while standing in water. This pump is designed for water only; do not use it for flammable liquids, chemicals, or sewage.
  • Installation: Ensure the sump pit is clear of debris. Do not restrict the float switch movement. The pump must be installed in a manner that prevents it from tipping over.
  • Children and Pets: Keep children and pets away from the sump pit and operating pump.
  • Temperature: Do not use this pump for water temperatures exceeding 104°F (40°C).

3. Package Contents

Verify that all components are present and undamaged upon opening the package. If any parts are missing or damaged, contact customer support immediately.

Note: Additional plumbing fittings, discharge pipes, and check valves are typically sold separately and are required for complete installation.

4. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is critical for the safe and efficient operation of your sump pump. If you are unsure about any step, consult a qualified plumber or electrician.

  1. Prepare the Sump Pit: Ensure the sump pit is clean and free of debris, gravel, or any obstructions that could interfere with the pump's operation or float switch. The pit should be large enough to accommodate the pump and allow for free movement of the vertical switch.
  2. Position the Pump: Place the pump on a solid, level surface at the bottom of the sump pit. Ensure it is stable and will not tip over. The pump should be positioned so that the float switch has ample space to move up and down without obstruction from the pit walls or other plumbing.
  3. Connect Discharge Pipe: Attach a discharge pipe (typically 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" NPT, check pump specifications for exact size) to the pump's discharge port. Use thread sealant tape for a watertight connection.
  4. Install Check Valve: Install a check valve in the discharge pipe above the pump. This prevents water from flowing back into the sump pit when the pump shuts off, reducing short cycling and wear on the pump.
  5. Route Discharge Pipe: Route the discharge pipe to an appropriate drainage area, ensuring it slopes away from the foundation. Do not discharge water directly onto adjacent properties or into septic systems without proper authorization.
  6. Electrical Connection: Plug the pump's power cord into a 120V AC, 60 Hz, properly grounded electrical outlet protected by a GFCI. Do not use extension cords. Ensure the power cord is routed to prevent damage and is not submerged in water.
  7. Test Operation: Once installed, fill the sump pit with water to activate the pump. Observe the pump's operation, ensuring it turns on when the water level rises and turns off when the water is removed. Verify that the float switch moves freely and activates/deactivates the pump correctly.

5. Operating Instructions

The PROFLO PF92341 sump pump is designed for automatic operation via its vertical float switch.

  • Automatic Operation: Once properly installed and plugged into a GFCI outlet, the pump will automatically activate when the water level in the sump pit rises to a predetermined level, lifting the vertical float switch. It will continue to pump water until the level drops and the float switch disengages.
  • Manual Override (if applicable): This model features a vertical switch for automatic operation. There is no manual override for continuous pumping.
  • Power Interruption: In the event of a power outage, the pump will cease to operate. It will resume automatic operation once power is restored. Consider a battery backup system for continuous protection during power failures.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your sump pump. Always disconnect power before performing any maintenance.

  • Monthly Inspection:
    • Check the sump pit for debris, dirt, or sediment that could clog the pump intake or interfere with the float switch. Clean as necessary.
    • Verify that the float switch moves freely and is not obstructed by wires, pipes, or the pit walls.
    • Pour a bucket of water into the sump pit to ensure the pump activates and deactivates correctly.
  • Impeller Inspection: Periodically inspect the pump's impeller for clogs or damage. If the pump is running but not moving water, the impeller may be obstructed. Disconnect power, remove the pump, and clear any blockages.
  • Discharge Pipe Check: Ensure the discharge pipe is free of leaks and blockages. Verify that the check valve is functioning properly.
  • Winterization (if applicable): If the pump is installed in an area subject to freezing temperatures and will not be used, disconnect it, drain all water, and store it in a warm, dry location to prevent freeze damage.

7. Troubleshooting

Before attempting any repairs, always disconnect the pump from the power source.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Pump does not start or run.
  • No power to the pump.
  • GFCI tripped.
  • Float switch obstructed or defective.
  • Motor overload.
  • Check power supply and connections.
  • Reset GFCI. If it trips repeatedly, consult an electrician.
  • Clear obstructions around the float switch. Test switch movement.
  • Allow pump to cool. If it continues to trip, contact service.
Pump runs but does not pump water.
  • Clogged intake or impeller.
  • Air lock.
  • Discharge pipe blocked or frozen.
  • Check valve installed backward or stuck.
  • Disconnect power, remove pump, clear debris from intake and impeller.
  • Lift and lower the pump slightly to release trapped air.
  • Inspect and clear discharge pipe.
  • Verify check valve orientation and function.
Pump cycles too frequently (short cycling).
  • Check valve not holding water.
  • Sump pit too small.
  • Float switch set too low or obstructed.
  • Inspect or replace check valve.
  • Consider a larger sump pit or adjusting float switch settings if possible (not applicable for fixed vertical switch).
  • Ensure float switch is free to move.
Pump is excessively noisy or vibrates.
  • Debris in impeller.
  • Pump not sitting level.
  • Worn bearings (internal issue).
  • Disconnect power, remove pump, clear debris from impeller.
  • Ensure pump is on a stable, level surface.
  • Contact customer support for service.
