• Built-in Stereo Condenser Microphones: Mounted in a true XY pattern for accurate stereo imaging. These microphones feature improved shockmounting to reduce handling noise.

• XLR/TRS Combo Inputs: Two locking inputs for external microphones or line-level sources, supporting 4-track recording.

Setup

1. Battery and SD Card Installation

1. Open the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit.
2. Insert four AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity.
3. Open the SD card slot cover on the side of the unit.
4. Insert the provided 4GB microSD card (or another compatible card) into the slot until it clicks into place. Close the cover.

2. Powering On/Off

• To power on, slide and hold the POWER switch until the display illuminates.
• To power off, slide and hold the POWER switch until the display turns off.

3. Initial Settings

• Upon first power-on, you may be prompted to set the date, time, and language. Follow the on-screen instructions using the navigation buttons.

Operating Instructions

1. Basic Recording with Built-in Microphones

1. Ensure no external microphones are connected to the XLR inputs.
2. Adjust the angle of the built-in microphones to suit your recording environment (XY pattern is standard).
3. Press the REC button once to enter record standby mode. The input level meters will display.
4. Use the INPUT LEVEL dial to adjust the recording level so that the meters peak around -12dB to -6dB, avoiding clipping (red indicators).
5. Press the REC button again to start recording.
6. To stop recording, press the STOP button.

2. Using External XLR Inputs

1. Connect your XLR microphones or line-level devices to the XLR/TRS combo inputs at the bottom of the unit.
2. If using condenser microphones requiring phantom power, enable it through the menu settings (refer to the full manual for detailed menu navigation).
3. Press the REC button once to enter record standby.
4. Adjust the INPUT LEVEL dial for appropriate levels.
5. Press REC again to start recording.

3. Dual Recording Mode

• The DR-44WL features a Dual Recording mode which records a second "safety take" at a lower level to prevent clipping from unexpected volume spikes. This can be enabled in the recording settings menu.

4. WiFi Connectivity and Remote Control

The DR-44WL's WiFi feature allows for remote control and file transfer via a smartphone or computer app.

1. Download the dedicated Tascam DR Control app for iOS, Android, Mac, or Windows devices.
2. Press the WiFi button on the side of the DR-44WL to activate WiFi.
3. Connect your smart device to the DR-44WL's WiFi network (SSID and password displayed on the recorder's screen).
4. Launch the DR Control app to remotely start/stop recording, adjust levels, and transfer files.

5. Playback

• Navigate to the file list using the menu buttons.
• Select the desired recording and press the PLAY button.
• Connect headphones to the LINE OUT jack for private monitoring.

Maintenance

• Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the unit. Avoid liquid cleaners.
• Storage: Store the recorder in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Remove batteries if storing for extended periods.
• Firmware Updates: Periodically check the Tascam website for firmware updates to ensure optimal performance and access to new features. Updates can often be performed via WiFi.
