4. Setup
Before first use, follow these steps:
- Unpacking: Carefully remove the toaster from its packaging. Retain packaging for future transport or storage.
- Placement: Place the toaster on a stable, flat, heat-resistant surface, away from flammable materials (e.g., curtains, walls). Ensure adequate ventilation around the appliance.
- First Use: Before toasting bread for consumption, operate the toaster empty for a few cycles at the highest browning setting (level 6) to burn off any manufacturing residues. A slight odor or smoke may be present; this is normal and will dissipate. Ensure the area is well-ventilated.
- Power Connection: Plug the power cord into a grounded 220-240V, 50-60Hz electrical outlet.
5. Operating Instructions
To toast bread:
- Insert Bread: Place up to four slices of bread into the toasting slots. The toaster features automatic bread centering for even toasting.
- Select Browning Level: Turn the browning control knob to your desired setting, from 1 (lightest) to 6 (darkest). Start with a medium setting (e.g., 3 or 4) and adjust as needed for future use.
- Start Toasting: Press the toasting lever down until it locks into place. The indicator light on the STOP button will illuminate, and the toasting cycle will begin.
- Ejection: Once the selected browning level is reached, the toaster will automatically switch off, and the bread will be ejected.
- Stop Cycle Early: To stop the toasting cycle at any time, press the STOP button. The bread will immediately eject.
6. Special Functions
Your Smeg toaster includes three special functions:
- DEFROST Function: Ideal for toasting frozen bread. Insert the frozen bread, select your desired browning level, press the toasting lever down, and then press the DEFROST button. The indicator light for DEFROST will illuminate. The toaster will automatically adjust the toasting time to account for frozen bread.
- REHEAT Function: Use this to warm up already toasted bread without further browning. Insert the bread, press the toasting lever down, and then press the REHEAT button. The indicator light for REHEAT will illuminate. This cycle is shorter and uses less heat.
- BAGEL Function: Perfect for toasting bagels, buns, or thick slices of bread on one side only. Insert the bagel (cut side facing inwards), select your desired browning level, press the toasting lever down, and then press the BAGEL button. The indicator light for BAGEL will illuminate. This function activates only the inner heating elements to toast the cut side while gently warming the outer side.
7. Cleaning and Maintenance
Regular cleaning ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your toaster.
7.1. Crumb Tray
- Always unplug the toaster and allow it to cool completely before cleaning.
- Pull out the removable crumb tray located at the bottom of the toaster.
- Empty the crumbs into a waste bin.
- Wipe the tray with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly before reinserting.
- Never operate the toaster without the crumb tray in place.
7.2. Exterior Cleaning
- Wipe the exterior surfaces with a soft, damp cloth. For chrome finishes, use a non-abrasive cleaner specifically designed for stainless steel or chrome, if necessary, and polish with a soft, dry cloth.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the finish.
- Never immerse the toaster in water or any other liquid.
7.3. Interior Cleaning
- Do not attempt to clean the interior heating elements.
- If food becomes lodged in the slots, unplug the toaster and allow it to cool. Carefully turn the toaster upside down and gently shake to dislodge the food. Do not use metal utensils to remove food, as this can damage the elements or cause an electric shock.
8. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your toaster, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Toaster does not turn on. | Not plugged in; power outage; faulty outlet. | Ensure the toaster is securely plugged into a working outlet. Check your circuit breaker. |
| Bread does not toast evenly. | Uneven bread thickness; first use; crumb buildup. | Ensure bread slices are of similar thickness. Run a few empty cycles for new toasters. Clean the crumb tray regularly. |
| Toasting lever does not stay down. | Toaster not plugged in; no power; internal malfunction. | The lever will only latch when the toaster is plugged in and receiving power. Check power supply. If problem persists, contact support. |
| Smoke or burning smell. | Food lodged in slots; excessive crumbs; first use. | Immediately press STOP and unplug. Allow to cool. Remove any lodged food or clean crumb tray. Initial use may produce a slight odor. |
| Bread is too dark/light. | Browning level setting incorrect. | Adjust the browning control knob to a lower setting for lighter toast or a higher setting for darker toast. |
If the problem persists after attempting these solutions, please contact Smeg customer support.
