5. Installation Instructions
It is highly recommended to consult your vehicle's specific service manual for detailed, step-by-step instructions and torque specifications. The following is a general guide.
5.1. Rear Fuel Filter (Under Bed)
- Prepare for Drainage: Place a suitable drain pan or bucket beneath the rear fuel filter housing to collect any spilled fuel.
- Drain Fuel: Open the drain valve on the bottom of the fuel filter housing to allow fuel to drain. Use a hose if necessary to direct the fuel into the pan.
- Remove Old Filter: Once drained, use a 29mm socket or appropriate filter wrench to loosen and remove the fuel filter housing. Carefully pull out the old filter element.
- Replace O-ring: Remove the old O-ring from the housing and install the new O-ring provided with the Mopar filter. Lubricate the new O-ring with clean diesel fuel or a suitable lubricant.
- Install New Filter: Insert the new Mopar fuel filter into the housing. Ensure it is seated correctly.
- Reattach Housing: Thread the housing back into place and tighten it using the 29mm socket. Do not overtighten. Close the drain valve.
5.2. Front Fuel Filter (Engine Bay)
- Prepare for Drainage: Place a drain pan or bucket beneath the front fuel filter housing.
- Drain Fuel: Locate the drain valve on the front fuel filter housing. Open it to drain fuel into the pan.
- Remove Old Filter: Use a 29mm socket or appropriate tool to remove the fuel filter cap. Carefully pull out the old filter element.
- Replace O-ring: Remove the old O-ring from the cap and install the new O-ring provided with the Mopar filter. Lubricate the new O-ring with clean diesel fuel or a suitable lubricant.
- Install New Filter: Insert the new Mopar fuel filter into the housing. Ensure it is seated correctly.
- Reattach Cap: Thread the cap back into place and tighten it using the 29mm socket. Do not overtighten. Close the drain valve.
5.3. Post-Installation Steps
- Prime the Fuel System: Cycle the ignition key to the 'ON' position (without starting the engine) several times for 15-30 seconds each time. This allows the fuel pump to prime the system and remove air from the lines.
- Start Engine and Check for Leaks: Start the engine and let it idle. Carefully inspect both fuel filter housings for any signs of fuel leaks. If leaks are present, shut off the engine immediately and re-check the installation.
- Reset Fuel Filter Life Monitor (if applicable): If your vehicle has a fuel filter life monitoring system, follow your vehicle's instructions to reset it.

6. Maintenance
Regular replacement of your fuel filters is crucial for maintaining optimal engine performance and longevity. Refer to your Dodge Ram's owner's manual or service schedule for recommended replacement intervals. Typically, diesel fuel filters should be replaced every 15,000 to 20,000 miles, or as specified by the manufacturer, depending on driving conditions and fuel quality.
7. Troubleshooting
If you experience issues after replacing your fuel filters, consider the following:
- Engine Cranks but Won't Start: This could indicate air in the fuel system. Ensure the system was properly primed after installation. Repeat the priming procedure.
- Reduced Engine Performance/Rough Idling: Check for any fuel leaks around the filter housings. Ensure all connections are secure and O-rings are properly seated.
- Fuel Leakage: Immediately shut off the engine. Verify that the filter housings are tightened correctly and that the O-rings are not pinched or damaged.
If problems persist, consult a certified mechanic or your vehicle's service center.
