Operating the Machine
1. Using Cartridges
The Cricut Expression 1 machine operates using physical Cricut cartridges. Each cartridge contains a collection of images, fonts, and shapes. To use a design, insert the desired cartridge into the cartridge slot on the machine.
2. Selecting Designs and Settings
- Once a cartridge is inserted, use the machine's keypad and LCD screen to browse and select your desired image or font.
- Adjust the cutting size. The machine supports cuts from 0.25 inches up to 11.5 inches.
- Utilize the six modes and four functions available on the machine to customize your cuts, including features like Fit to Page, Quantity, Mirror Image, and Auto Fill.
- Set the appropriate blade depth and pressure based on the material you are cutting. Refer to the material settings guide (usually provided with cartridges or online resources).
3. Initiating a Cut
After selecting your design and adjusting settings, ensure the mat is loaded correctly. Press the "Cut" button to begin the cutting process. The machine will precisely cut the design onto your material.
Maintenance
1. Cleaning the Machine
- Regularly wipe down the exterior of the machine with a soft, dry cloth.
- Periodically clean the cutting area and rollers to remove any debris or material scraps that may accumulate. Use a soft brush or compressed air.
- Ensure the machine is unplugged before cleaning.
2. Blade Care and Replacement
The cutting blade is a consumable part and will dull over time, especially with frequent use or cutting thicker materials. A dull blade can lead to incomplete cuts or ragged edges.
- Inspect your blade regularly for signs of wear.
- To replace the blade, carefully remove the blade housing from the carriage.
- Press the plunger at the top of the housing to release the old blade.
- Insert a new Cricut compatible blade into the housing.
- Reinsert the blade housing into the machine's carriage.
3. Cutting Mat Care
- Always replace the protective plastic sheet on the cutting mat when not in use to maintain its stickiness and prevent dust accumulation.
- If the mat loses its stickiness, it can often be cleaned with warm water and mild soap, then air-dried.
- Replace the cutting mat when it no longer holds material securely.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Machine not powering on. | Power cable not connected, faulty outlet. | Ensure power cable is securely connected to the machine and a working electrical outlet. Test the outlet with another device. |
| Cuts are incomplete or ragged. | Dull blade, incorrect blade depth/pressure, worn cutting mat. | Replace the blade. Adjust blade depth and pressure settings. Ensure the cutting mat is sufficiently sticky to hold the material. |
| Machine makes grinding noise. | Internal mechanical issue, obstruction. | Turn off the machine and inspect for any visible obstructions in the carriage path. If the noise persists, contact customer support. |
| Shapes come out distorted or incorrect size. | Incorrect settings, material shifting on mat. | Verify all settings (size, mode) on the machine's display. Ensure material is firmly adhered to the cutting mat and not shifting during the cut. |
