1. Product Overview

The Extech MD10 is a compact, non-contact magnet detector designed to identify the presence of magnetic fields, including AC, DC, and permanent magnets. 2. Safety Information

Please read and understand all safety instructions before operating the Extech MD10. Failure to follow these instructions may result in injury or damage to the device.

  • Do not attempt to open or modify the device. There are no user-serviceable parts inside.
  • Ensure batteries are inserted with correct polarity.
  • Remove batteries if the device is not going to be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
  • Keep the device away from extreme temperatures, humidity, and direct sunlight.
  • This device is designed for non-contact detection of magnetic fields. Do not use it for direct electrical contact.
  • Dispose of batteries and the device according to local regulations.

4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

The Extech MD10 requires two AAA batteries for operation. These are typically included with the device.

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the rear of the device.
  2. Slide or unclip the cover to open the compartment.
  3. Insert two AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+ and -) as indicated inside the compartment.
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

The device is now ready for use. A blue LED will illuminate when the device is powered on and detecting a magnetic field.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Magnet Field Detection

To detect a magnetic field:

  1. Press and hold the power button (orange button with power symbol) on the device. The device is active only while this button is pressed.
  2. Bring the tip of the MD10 close to the object or area you suspect has a magnetic field.
  3. If a magnetic field is present, the blue LED at the tip of the detector will illuminate. The intensity of the field may affect the brightness or responsiveness of the LED.
  4. Release the power button to turn off the detection function.

The MD10 can detect AC, DC, and permanent magnetic fields. It is particularly useful for checking relays, solenoids, and audio speakers.

5.2 Flashlight Function

The MD10 includes a built-in flashlight for illuminating dark work areas.

  1. Press and hold the flashlight button (button with light bulb symbol) on the side of the device.
  2. The bright LED flashlight at the tip will illuminate.
  3. Release the button to turn off the flashlight.

The flashlight operates independently of the magnet detection function.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning

To ensure accurate readings and prolong the life of your device:

  • Wipe the device with a dry, clean cloth.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Avoid getting moisture inside the device.

6.2 Storage

When not in use, store the MD10 in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and potential damage to the device.

7. Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Device does not turn on / LED does not light up. Dead or low batteries. Incorrect battery installation. Replace batteries with fresh AAA batteries. Ensure batteries are inserted with correct polarity.
Blue LED is dim or flickers. Low battery. Weak magnetic field. Replace batteries. Bring the detector closer to the magnetic source.
Flashlight does not work. Dead or low batteries. Flashlight button not pressed firmly. Replace batteries. Press and hold the flashlight button firmly.
