2. Product Features
- The Sony ICF-5900, affectionately known as the 'Skysensor', is a 5-band radio designed for multi-band reception.

3. Setup
3.1 Power Supply
The ICF-5900 can be powered by three (3) D-size batteries or via an AC 100V power source using a compatible AC adapter (DC 4.5V). Ensure the correct polarity when inserting batteries. For AC operation, connect the AC adapter to the unit's DC input jack and then to a standard wall outlet.
3.2 Antenna Connection
The unit features a built-in rod antenna for FM and SW reception, and a ferrite bar antenna for MW reception. For improved reception, especially on SW bands, an external antenna can be connected to the dedicated external antenna terminals.

4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Power On/Off
Locate the POWER switch, typically combined with the volume control. Rotate it clockwise to turn the unit on and adjust the volume. Rotate counter-clockwise until it clicks to turn off.
4.2 Band Selection
Use the BAND selector switch to choose your desired frequency band: FM, MW (Medium Wave), SW1, SW2, or SW3 (Shortwave bands).
4.3 Tuning
- Main Tuning: Use the large MAIN TUNING dial to broadly select the desired frequency.
- Spread Dial (SW): For shortwave bands, use the SPREAD DIAL for fine-tuning. This allows for precise adjustment within a ±130kHz range around the main tuning frequency.
- Crystal Marker: Engage the X-TAL MARKER switch to activate the crystal marker. This provides precise calibration points at 250kHz intervals, aiding in accurate frequency identification.
4.4 Tone Control
Adjust the TONE control knob to modify the audio output, enhancing clarity for voice or richness for music.
4.5 Sensitivity Switch
The SENSITIVITY switch (often labeled DX/LOCAL or similar) adjusts the receiver's sensitivity. Use DX for distant stations and LOCAL for strong local signals to prevent overload.
5. Maintenance
5.1 Cleaning
Wipe the exterior of the unit with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, use a cloth lightly dampened with water or a mild detergent, then wipe dry. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
5.2 Battery Replacement
When battery power is low, replace all three D-size batteries with new ones. Ensure correct polarity. If the unit will not be used for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and damage.
5.3 Storage
Store the radio in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high humidity. Keep it away from dust and vibrations.
6. Troubleshooting
If you experience issues with your ICF-5900, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
- No Power: Check if batteries are inserted correctly and are not depleted. If using AC power, ensure the adapter is properly connected and the outlet is functional.
- Poor Reception/Static: Extend the rod antenna fully. If using an external antenna, ensure it is securely connected. Try adjusting the SENSITIVITY switch. For MW, rotate the unit for optimal reception as the ferrite bar antenna is directional.
- S-Meter Not Moving: In some older units, the S-meter needle may become stuck. This often requires professional service.
- No Sound from Speaker: Ensure volume is turned up and headphones are not connected (if applicable). Check for any physical damage to the speaker.
