1. Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the Rockford Fosgate T400X4ad Compact 4-Channel Car Amplifier. This amplifier is designed to deliver high-quality audio performance in a compact form factor, suitable for various vehicle types. This manual provides essential information for proper installation, operation, and maintenance to ensure optimal performance and longevity of your amplifier.
2. Safety Information
Please read all instructions carefully before installing or operating your amplifier. Failure to do so may result in personal injury or damage to the amplifier or vehicle.
- Electrical Hazard: Always disconnect the vehicle's battery negative terminal before beginning any installation.
- Professional Installation: If you are unsure about the installation process, seek assistance from a qualified professional.
- Wiring: Ensure all wiring is properly routed and secured to prevent pinching, cutting, or short circuits. Use appropriate gauge wiring for power and ground connections.
- Ventilation: Install the amplifier in a location that allows for adequate airflow to prevent overheating.
- Volume Levels: Prolonged exposure to high volume levels can cause hearing damage.
3. Product Overview
The T400X4ad is a compact 4-channel amplifier featuring proprietary Class-AD technology and Constant Power output. It delivers 100 Watts x 4 at 4-Ohm or 2-Ohm, or 200 Watts x 2 when bridged at 4-Ohm. Key features include high-level auto turn-on, CLEAN circuit input/output clip detection, and an on-board Punch EQ.

4. Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for the performance and safety of your amplifier. Follow these steps carefully.
4.1 Mounting Location
Choose a mounting location that provides adequate ventilation, is protected from moisture, and is secure. Avoid mounting on carpet or directly to metal surfaces without proper insulation.

Figure 4.1: Example of a T400X4ad amplifier installed in a vehicle, demonstrating a secure and accessible mounting location.
4.2 Wiring Connections
Ensure all connections are tight and secure to prevent power loss or short circuits.
4.2.1 Power and Ground Connections
- B+ (Power): Connect directly to the positive terminal of the vehicle's battery using an appropriate gauge power wire and an in-line fuse within 18 inches of the battery.
- GND (Ground): Connect to a clean, bare metal chassis ground point in the vehicle. The ground wire should be the same gauge as the power wire and as short as possible.
- REM (Remote Turn-On): Connect to the remote turn-on output of your head unit. This wire signals the amplifier to turn on and off with the head unit.

4.2.2 Input Connections
The T400X4ad supports both low-level (RCA) and high-level (speaker wire) inputs.
- Low-Level Input: Connect RCA cables from your head unit's pre-amp outputs to the amplifier's FRONT and REAR input jacks.
- High-Level Input: If your head unit does not have RCA outputs, use the included high-level input harness to connect directly to your head unit's speaker outputs. The amplifier features auto turn-on when using high-level inputs.

Figure 4.3: Front panel input connections for both front and rear channels, including RCA and high-level input ports.
4.2.3 Speaker Connections
Connect your speakers to the amplifier's speaker output terminals. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -) for each speaker. The amplifier can be configured for 4-channel stereo or 2-channel bridged operation.
- 4-Channel Stereo: Connect one speaker to each of the four output channels.
- 2-Channel Bridged: For higher power output to two speakers (e.g., subwoofers), bridge the front channels and the rear channels. Refer to the wiring diagram on the amplifier for correct bridging connections.
5. Operating Instructions
Once installed, adjust the amplifier settings for optimal audio performance.
5.1 Input Level Adjustment
The input level (gain) controls match the amplifier's input sensitivity to the output of your head unit. This is not a volume control.
- Turn the amplifier's input level controls to their minimum (counter-clockwise) position.
- Set your head unit's volume to about 75% of its maximum.
- Slowly increase the amplifier's input level control until you hear distortion or the CLEAN clip indicator illuminates. Then, back off slightly until the distortion or clip indicator disappears.
5.2 Crossover Adjustment
The T400X4ad features a 12dB/octave Butterworth crossover for both front and rear channels, allowing you to filter frequencies sent to your speakers.
- Full Range (AP): Passes all frequencies to the speakers.
- High Pass (HP): Allows frequencies above the set point to pass, typically used for full-range speakers to protect them from low bass.
- Low Pass (LP): Allows frequencies below the set point to pass, typically used for subwoofers.
Adjust the frequency knob (FREQ) to the desired crossover point based on your speaker's specifications.
5.3 Punch EQ Adjustment
The on-board Punch EQ provides a bass boost at 45Hz. Use this feature to enhance bass response if desired.
- Start with the EQ control at its minimum position.
- Gradually increase the EQ level to achieve the desired bass enhancement. Avoid excessive boost, which can lead to distortion or speaker damage.
6. Maintenance
The Rockford Fosgate T400X4ad amplifier requires minimal maintenance.
- Cleaning: Periodically wipe the amplifier's exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Connections: Occasionally check all wiring connections to ensure they remain tight and free from corrosion.
- Ventilation: Ensure that the amplifier's cooling fins are free from dust and debris to maintain proper heat dissipation.
7. Troubleshooting
If you experience problems with your amplifier, refer to the following troubleshooting guide before contacting support.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No Power / Amplifier Not Turning On | Blown fuse; Loose power/ground/remote wire; Faulty remote turn-on signal. | Check in-line fuse and amplifier fuses; Verify all power, ground, and remote connections; Test remote wire for 12V signal. |
| No Audio Output | Input cables disconnected; Speaker wires disconnected or shorted; Amplifier in protect mode; Incorrect input level settings. | Check RCA/high-level input connections; Verify speaker wiring and check for shorts; Check amplifier status light (PWR/PROTECT); Adjust input level. |
| Distorted Sound | Input level set too high; Speaker impedance too low; Damaged speakers; Incorrect crossover settings. | Reduce input level until distortion disappears (use CLEAN indicator); Ensure speaker impedance matches amplifier's capabilities; Inspect speakers for damage; Adjust crossover settings. |
| Amplifier Overheating | Insufficient ventilation; Speaker impedance too low; Prolonged high volume use. | Ensure adequate airflow around amplifier; Verify speaker impedance; Reduce volume or allow amplifier to cool. |
