Introduction
Thank you for choosing the Simplicity SL350 Serger Sewing Machine. This manual provides detailed instructions for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and care of your new serger. Please read all instructions carefully before using the machine to ensure proper setup and to achieve optimal sewing results. Keep this manual in a safe place for future reference.
Important Safety Instructions
- Always unplug the machine from the electrical outlet immediately after using and before cleaning, removing covers, or making any user servicing adjustments.
- Do not operate the machine with a damaged cord or plug. If the machine is not working properly, has been dropped or damaged, or dropped into water, return it to the nearest authorized service dealer for examination and repair.
- Keep fingers away from all moving parts. Special care is required around the serger needles.
- Always use the proper needle plate. The wrong plate can cause the needle to break.
- Do not pull or push fabric while stitching. This may deflect the needle causing it to break.
- Use only accessories recommended by the manufacturer as contained in this manual.
Setup
1. Unpacking and Placement
Carefully remove the serger from its packaging. Place the machine on a stable, level surface. Ensure there is adequate space around the machine for fabric handling and access to controls.

2. Power Connection
Connect the foot controller plug into the machine's receptacle and then plug the power cord into a suitable electrical outlet. Ensure the power switch is in the 'OFF' position before connecting to power.
3. Threading the Serger
Proper threading is critical for serger performance. The SL350 supports both 3-thread and 4-thread serging. Always follow the numbered threading path indicated on the machine. It is recommended to thread the loopers first, then the needles.
- Upper Looper: Follow the designated color-coded path for the upper looper thread.
- Lower Looper: Follow the designated color-coded path for the lower looper thread.
- Right Needle: Thread the right needle according to its color-coded path.
- Left Needle: Thread the left needle according to its color-coded path (for 4-thread operations).

4. Needle Installation
Ensure the machine is unplugged. Loosen the needle clamp screw(s) and insert the new needle(s) with the flat side facing the back of the machine. Push the needle(s) up as far as it will go and tighten the screw(s) securely.
5. Presser Foot Attachment
To attach the presser foot, align the pin on the foot with the groove on the presser foot holder. Lower the presser foot lever to snap the foot into place. To remove, press the release lever at the back of the presser foot holder.
Operating Instructions
1. Basic Serging Operation
With the machine threaded and power connected, turn the power switch to 'ON'. Place your fabric under the presser foot, aligning the edge with the cutting blade. Lower the presser foot. Gently press the foot controller to begin serging. Guide the fabric smoothly, allowing the machine to feed it.
2. Adjusting Thread Tension
The SL350 features individual tension dials for each thread. Correct tension is crucial for a balanced stitch. Adjust the dials incrementally, testing on a scrap piece of your fabric. A balanced stitch will have the looper threads meeting neatly at the fabric edge, with needle threads appearing straight.
3. Differential Feed
The differential feed feature allows you to adjust the feeding ratio of the front and rear feed dogs. This is essential for preventing stretching on knit fabrics or puckering on fine fabrics. Adjust the differential feed dial:
- Higher Ratio (e.g., 2.0): Gathers fabric, ideal for knits to prevent stretching.
- Lower Ratio (e.g., 0.7): Stretches fabric, useful for creating wavy effects or preventing puckering on delicate materials.
- Normal Ratio (e.g., 1.0): Standard feeding for most woven fabrics.
4. Stitch Length and Width Adjustments
Adjust the stitch length and width dials to suit your project. Shorter stitch lengths create denser stitches, while longer lengths are more open. Stitch width determines how wide the serged seam will be.
5. Free Arm Operation
To use the free arm, slide off the accessory tray. The free arm is ideal for serging small, tubular items such as cuffs, sleeves, and pant hems.
6. Adjustable Presser Foot Pressure
The presser foot pressure can be adjusted to accommodate different fabric thicknesses. Increase pressure for thick fabrics to ensure even feeding, and decrease pressure for delicate or slippery fabrics to prevent marking or stretching.

Maintenance
1. Cleaning
Regular cleaning is essential for smooth operation. Use a small brush to remove lint and thread scraps from the looper area, under the needle plate, and around the feed dogs. Compressed air can also be used carefully. Do not use solvents or harsh chemicals.
2. Oiling
Refer to your machine's specific oiling points diagram (usually found in the full manual). Apply a small drop of high-quality sewing machine oil to designated moving parts. Do not over-oil.
3. Needle Replacement
Replace needles regularly, especially if they become bent, dull, or if you experience skipped stitches or thread breakage. Always use the correct type and size of needles recommended for your serger.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Skipped Stitches | Incorrect needle installation, bent needle, wrong needle type, improper threading. | Reinstall needle correctly, replace needle, use correct needle, rethread machine. |
| Thread Breakage | Incorrect tension, poor quality thread, burr on thread path, incorrect threading. | Adjust tension, use quality thread, check thread path for obstructions, rethread. |
| Fabric Puckering | Too much presser foot pressure, incorrect differential feed setting, tight tension. | Reduce presser foot pressure, adjust differential feed, loosen tension. |
| Uneven Seams | Incorrect tension balance, dull cutting blade, inconsistent fabric feeding. | Adjust tension, replace blade (if necessary), guide fabric evenly. |
| Machine Not Starting | Power cord not plugged in, foot controller not connected, power switch off. | Check all power connections, ensure switch is ON. |
