Introduction
This manual provides detailed instructions for the safe and efficient operation of your TekPower TP50SW 50 Amp 13.8V Analog DC Power Supply. The TP50SW is designed to provide stable DC power for various applications, including Ham and CB radio equipment. It features a highly stable, fused, analog switching power supply with both fixed 13.8V and adjustable 9-15V DC output, capable of delivering up to 50A maximum current. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the device to ensure proper functionality and longevity.
Safety Precautions
To prevent electric shock, fire, or damage to the unit, please observe the following safety guidelines:
- Power Source: Ensure the input power matches the specified 110V AC 60Hz. Connecting to an incorrect voltage may damage the unit.
- Ventilation: Do not block ventilation openings. Adequate airflow is essential to prevent overheating. Maintain at least 4 inches (10 cm) of space around the unit.
- Environment: Operate the power supply in a dry, well-ventilated area. Avoid exposure to moisture, rain, or excessive humidity. Do not operate near flammable materials or in explosive atmospheres.
- Overload Protection: The unit is equipped with overload and short circuit protection. Do not exceed the maximum output current of 50A. If the protection circuit activates, disconnect the load and reduce the current demand before restarting.
- Fuse: The power supply contains an internal fuse (110V, 15A). If the unit fails to power on, check and replace the fuse with one of the same type and rating. Always disconnect the power cord before replacing the fuse.
- Connections: Ensure all DC output connections are secure and correctly polarized (+ to +, - to -) before applying power. Loose connections can cause arcing and damage.
- Servicing: Do not attempt to open or service the unit yourself. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Opening the casing voids the warranty.

Setup
- Unpacking: Carefully remove the power supply from its packaging. Inspect the unit for any signs of damage during transit.
- Placement: Place the power supply on a stable, flat surface. Ensure there is ample space (at least 4 inches or 10 cm) around all sides, especially the rear fan and side vents, for proper ventilation. Avoid placing it near heat sources or in direct sunlight.
- AC Power Connection:
- Ensure the power supply's ON/OFF switch is in the 'OFF' position.
- Connect the supplied AC power cord to the AC input socket on the rear panel of the power supply.
- Plug the other end of the AC power cord into a standard 110V AC 60Hz wall outlet.
- DC Load Connection:
- Main Output Terminals: For high-current devices, connect the positive (+) lead of your device to the red terminal and the negative (-) lead to the black terminal on the rear panel. Ensure connections are tight and secure.
- Cigarette Plug Output: For devices requiring a cigarette lighter connection, insert the device's plug into the cigarette plug socket on the front panel. Note the 10A current limit for this output.
- Always double-check polarity before powering on the unit to prevent damage to your connected equipment.
Operating Instructions
- Powering On:
- After all connections are made, switch the Power ON/OFF switch to the 'ON' position. The Power LED will illuminate.
- Selecting Output Voltage:
- Use the Voltage Switch (13.8V/ADJ) on the front panel:
- Set to '13.8V' for a fixed 13.8V DC output.
- Set to 'ADJ' to enable the Voltage Adjust Knob, allowing you to vary the output voltage between 9V and 15V. Turn the knob clockwise to increase voltage and counter-clockwise to decrease it.
- Monitoring Output:
- Use the Meter Switch to select what the analog meter displays:
- Set to 'V' to display the output voltage.
- Set to 'A' to display the output current (amperage).
- Using the Noise Offset Function:
- The Noise Offset Knob can be used to shift the switching frequency of the power supply to avoid interference with sensitive radio equipment. If you experience noise on your radio, slowly adjust this knob to find a setting that minimizes or eliminates the interference.
- Powering Off:
- Before disconnecting any load, switch the Power ON/OFF switch to the 'OFF' position.
- Unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet if the unit will not be used for an extended period.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Keep the unit clean by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure ventilation openings are free from dust and debris.
- Ventilation: Regularly check that the cooling fan and vents are not obstructed. Proper airflow is crucial for the longevity of the power supply.
- Fuse Replacement: If the power supply does not turn on, the internal fuse may need replacement.
- Disconnect the AC power cord from the wall outlet.
- Locate the fuse holder on the rear panel.
- Carefully remove the fuse holder cap and extract the old fuse.
- Replace it with a new fuse of the exact same rating (110V, 15A). Using an incorrect fuse can cause damage or fire.
- Securely replace the fuse holder cap.
- Storage: When storing the unit for extended periods, ensure it is in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Unit does not power on. | No AC power, faulty power cord, blown fuse. | Check AC outlet, inspect power cord, replace fuse (see Maintenance section). |
| No DC output. | Power switch off, incorrect voltage setting, internal protection activated. | Ensure power switch is ON. Verify Voltage switch is set correctly (13.8V or ADJ). Disconnect load, power cycle unit. |
| Output voltage or current is unstable. | Loose connections, excessive load, internal fault. | Check all connections. Reduce load to within specifications. If problem persists, contact support. |
| Audible noise or radio interference. | Switching noise from the power supply. | Adjust the Noise Offset knob slowly to find a quieter operating point. Ensure proper grounding of equipment. |
| Unit feels excessively hot. | Blocked ventilation, prolonged high-current operation, ambient temperature too high. | Ensure vents are clear. Reduce load. Operate in a cooler environment. |
