3.2. General Installation Steps

  1. Prepare the Door: Ensure your door has the correct bore holes. If installing on a new door, refer to the provided template and online drilling instructions.
  2. Determine Door Handing: Identify if your door is left-handed or right-handed. Open the door from the outside. If hinges are on the right, it's a right-handed door. If hinges are on the left, it's a left-handed door.
  3. Adjust Chassis (Left-Handed Doors Only): If you have a left-handed door, you will need to rotate the exterior and interior trim chassis 180 degrees clockwise. Remove the four screws holding the chassis to the trim plate, rotate, and re-secure.
  4. Install Deadbolt Latch: Insert the deadbolt latch into the door edge, ensuring the word "UP" is on top and the latch is centered in the door hole. Adjust the latch length if necessary (for 2-3/4 inch backset). Secure with the provided screws.
  5. Install Bottom Latch: Insert the bottom latch, ensuring the slant faces the direction the door closes. Adjust if not centered by grasping the pins on both sides and moving to the longer setting. Secure with screws.
  6. Install Lever Adapter: From the exterior side of the door, install the lever adapter.
  7. Install Exterior Plate: Line up the torque blade and spindle to the deadbolt and plain latch. Attach the mounting adapter if it was removed.
  8. Install Interior Adapter Ring: Ensure the arrow on the interior adapter ring points upwards. Secure with mounting screws in the inner screw holes.
  9. Install Interior Plate: Line up the torque blade and plain latch spindle. Ensure the interior turn piece is in an upright position and the curve of your interior spindle lines up with the curve of the interior spindle. Secure with mounting screws on the top and bottom.
  10. Install Levers: Install the interior and exterior levers. Ensure the lever faces away from the door edge. Tighten the set screws on both levers by rotating them clockwise with the included Allen wrench.
  11. Cover Exposed Holes (Optional): If previous handleset installation left exposed holes, use the interior and exterior hole covers with the throughbolt screw and interior hole washer to cover them.
  12. Install Strike Plates: Ensure strike holes are drilled at least 1 inch deep. Use the appropriate screws for the top and bottom strike plates as marked in the instructions. The longer screws should be used for holes closest to the door jamb for the top strike plate.

4. Operation

4.1. Locking and Unlocking

To lock the door from the exterior, use the key in the cylinder. To unlock, use the key. From the interior, use the thumb turn to lock or unlock the deadbolt.

4.2. SmartKey Re-Keying

SmartKey Security allows you to re-key your lock in three easy steps using your functioning key, your new key, and the SmartKey learn tool.

Steps for SmartKey re-keying

Figure 4.1: Visual guide for the three steps of SmartKey re-keying.

Re-Keying Steps:

  1. Step 1: Insert the key that currently operates your lock and turn it 90 degrees clockwise.
  2. Step 2: Insert the included SmartKey tool fully and firmly into the SmartKey hole. Remove the SmartKey tool and the current key.
  3. Step 3: Fully insert your new key into the lock and rotate it 180 degrees. Rotate the new key 90 degrees back into the straight position and remove it. Your lock is now re-keyed to your new key, and your old key will no longer operate the lock.

5. Maintenance

To maintain the finish and functionality of your Baldwin handleset, follow these guidelines:

  • Clean regularly with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents, or polishing agents, as these can damage the finish.
  • Do not use an electric drill or electric screwdriver to tighten screws during installation or maintenance, as this can cause damage.
  • Periodically check all screws and fasteners to ensure they are tight. Loose components can affect performance and security.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your handleset, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • Difficulty Tightening Screws: Ensure the latch is installed correctly. The turn piece should be vertical, the latch bolt extended, and the curve of the exterior torque blade should be facing up.
  • Latch Not Catching Strike Plate: Test the installation by closing the door. If the latch is loose or not catching, use a screwdriver to adjust the strike tab to better grip the latch bolt.
  • Key Not Operating Lock After Re-Keying: Ensure all SmartKey re-keying steps were followed precisely. If the issue persists, repeat the re-keying process carefully.
