1. Product Overview
This manual provides detailed instructions for the assembly, operation, and maintenance of your Thomas & Friends BDP13 Thomas and the Avalanche Train Set. This action-packed track set allows Thomas to navigate a steep incline, a tilting track section to avoid a precipice, a rapid descent, and a tunnel that opens upon his approach. The circuit extends over 1 meter, offering an engaging play experience for children aged 3 years and older.
The set includes Thomas the train and various track pieces designed to create an exciting adventure scenario. Please ensure all components are present before beginning assembly.

2.2 Battery Installation
Thomas the train requires 2 AAA batteries (not included). To install:
- Locate the battery compartment on the underside of Thomas.
- Using a small Phillips head screwdriver, open the battery compartment cover.
- Insert 2 new AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Replace the cover and secure with the screw.
Important: Batteries are not included. For optimal performance, use fresh alkaline batteries. Battery life may vary with intensive use.
2.3 Track Assembly
Follow the included diagram to connect the track pieces. Ensure all connections are secure and the track sections are properly aligned, especially for inclines and descents. Proper alignment is crucial for smooth train operation.
- Connect the straight and curved track pieces to form the base circuit.
- Assemble the mountain feature and its supports.
- Attach the ascending and descending track sections to the mountain and main circuit.
- Ensure the tilting track section on the mountain is free to move.
3. Operating Instructions
Once the track is fully assembled and batteries are installed in Thomas, you are ready to begin play.
3.1 Starting Thomas
- Place Thomas on the track. Ensure all wheels are properly seated on the rails.
- Locate the ON/OFF switch on Thomas (usually on the top or side).
- Flip the switch to the 'ON' position to start Thomas moving.

3.2 Navigating the Avalanche Feature
Thomas will ascend a steep slope. Upon reaching the top, he will encounter a precipice. The track section will tilt, allowing Thomas to safely cross to the other side and descend rapidly. As Thomas approaches the tunnel at the base of the mountain, the tunnel entrance will open automatically.

Note: If Thomas moves too quickly due to very fresh batteries, he might overshoot the tilting track section. If this occurs, consider using slightly less powerful batteries or allowing the current batteries to run down slightly for optimal performance of the avalanche feature.
4. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your train set.
4.1 Cleaning
- Wipe the track and train with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and debris.
- Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Ensure no foreign objects are lodged in Thomas's wheels or gears.
4.2 Battery Care
- Remove batteries from Thomas if the toy will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
- Replace all batteries at the same time. Do not mix old and new batteries, or different types of batteries.
- Dispose of used batteries responsibly according to local regulations.
5. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Thomas & Friends BDP13 train set, please refer to the following common solutions:
- Thomas is not moving:
- Ensure the ON/OFF switch is in the 'ON' position.
- Check that batteries are correctly installed and are not depleted. Replace if necessary.
- Verify that Thomas's wheels are clean and free of obstructions.
- Thomas derails frequently:
- Inspect all track connections to ensure they are secure and properly aligned.
- Ensure the track surface is flat and stable.
- Check Thomas's wheels for any damage or debris.
- Avalanche feature (tilting track) is not working correctly:
- Ensure the tilting mechanism is free from obstructions and moves smoothly.
- Verify that the track sections leading to and from the tilting part are perfectly aligned. A slightly bent or misaligned track piece can prevent proper function.
- As noted in operation, if Thomas is too fast, he might not trigger the mechanism correctly.
