Traxxas 3355R Velineon VXL-3s Electronic Speed Control User Manual

Brand: Traxxas | Model: 3355R

1. Overview

The Traxxas Velineon VXL-3s Electronic Speed Control (ESC) is a waterproof, brushless system designed for high-performance remote-controlled vehicles. It offers simplified operation with versatile drive profiles and advanced protection features.

Key Features:

  • Waterproof Design: Ensures reliable performance in wet conditions.
  • Drive Profiles: Easily switch between Sport, Race, and Training Mode (patented). Training Mode limits full-throttle power to 50% for new drivers.
  • Battery Compatibility: Features built-in two-stage low voltage detection for Lithium Polymer (LiPo) batteries, including powerful 11.1-volt 3S packs.
  • Thermal Protection: Two-stage thermal shutdown protection safeguards the VXL-3s from overheating.
  • High-Current Capacity: Delivers up to 320 amps peak current.
  • Connectors: Equipped with gold-plated 3.5mm bullet connectors on 12-gauge Maxx Cable for efficient power transfer.

2. Setup

2.1 Connecting the ESC and Motor

Connect the motor wires to the ESC's output terminals. The VXL-3s ESC uses 3.5mm gold-plated bullet connectors. Ensure the middle wire of the motor connects to the middle wire of the ESC (B to B). The outer two wires (A and C) can be swapped to change the motor's rotation direction if needed after initial setup.

2.2 Connecting to Receiver and Battery

  1. Plug the ESC's receiver wire into Channel 2 (throttle) on your vehicle's receiver. Pay attention to the polarity; the black wire typically goes to the outside or thin edge of the receiver.
  2. Connect your battery pack to the ESC's battery connector. The VXL-3s uses a Traxxas Connector for optimal performance.

2.3 ESC Calibration to Radio

Before operating, the ESC must be calibrated to your radio transmitter to ensure proper throttle and brake response. This process teaches the ESC the neutral, full throttle, and full reverse positions.

  1. With the ESC connected to the receiver and battery, hold down the SET button on the ESC's power switch.
  2. Turn on the ESC. The LED will blink red, indicating it's in calibration mode.
  3. Release the SET button when the LED blinks once. This sets the neutral position.
  4. Push the throttle trigger to the full throttle position and hold it. Press the SET button once. The LED will blink twice.
  5. Push the throttle trigger to the full reverse position and hold it. Press the SET button once. The LED will blink three times.
  6. The ESC is now calibrated and ready for operation.

3. Operating Modes

The VXL-3s ESC offers three distinct drive profiles to suit various driving styles and skill levels:

  • Sport Mode: Provides full forward, brake, and reverse. This is the default mode and suitable for general driving.
  • Race Mode: Offers full forward and brake, but no reverse. Ideal for racing applications where reverse is not permitted.
  • Training Mode (Patented): Limits full throttle to 50% and full reverse to 50%. This mode is excellent for new or young drivers to safely develop control skills.

4. Programming and Tuning

The VXL-3s ESC can be programmed using an LED Program Card (sold separately). This card allows adjustment of various parameters to fine-tune the ESC's performance.

Programmable Items:

  1. Running Mode: Select between Forward with Brake, Forward/Reverse with Brake, or Forward with Reverse.
  2. Cutoff Voltage: Adjust the low voltage cutoff for LiPo batteries (e.g., 2.8V/Cell, 3.0V/Cell, 3.2V/Cell, 3.4V/Cell) or disable for NiMH batteries.
  3. Punch: Controls the linearity of the throttle response. Higher levels provide more aggressive acceleration.
  4. Drag Brake Force: Sets the amount of automatic braking applied when the throttle returns to neutral. Useful for rock crawling or precise control.
  5. Max. Brake Force: Adjusts the maximum braking power. Lowering this can prevent tire lock-up.
  6. Max. Reverse Force: Sets the maximum power available in reverse.
  7. Neutral Range: Defines the dead band around the neutral throttle position. Adjust if experiencing inconsistent neutral or drag brake behavior.
  8. Timing: Adjusts the electronic timing advance to the motor. Increasing timing can increase motor speed but also increases motor temperature.
  9. LiPo Cells: Allows manual selection of the number of LiPo cells (2S, 3S, 4S) or Auto-detection.
  10. BEC Voltage: Sets the voltage supplied to the receiver and servos (e.g., 6.0V, 7.4V). Adjust for high-voltage servos.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your VXL-3s ESC.

  • Cleaning: After use, especially in wet or dirty conditions, clean the ESC with a soft brush or compressed air to remove debris. For waterproof components, a gentle rinse with fresh water is acceptable, followed by thorough drying.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect all wires and connectors for signs of wear, fraying, or corrosion. Ensure all connections are secure.
  • Cooling Fan: Ensure the cooling fan (if present and active) is free from obstructions and operating correctly. The fan is temperature-sensing and will only activate when the ESC reaches a certain temperature.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your VXL-3s ESC, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power/Motor Not Starting:
    • Check battery connections and ensure the battery is charged.
    • Verify the ESC is properly connected to the receiver (Channel 2).
    • Ensure the ESC is calibrated to your radio transmitter. If calibration fails or is inconsistent, refer to the calibration steps.
  • Motor Runs in Wrong Direction: If the motor spins in the incorrect direction after calibration, swap any two of the three motor wires connected to the ESC.
  • Overheating: If the ESC or motor becomes excessively hot, check your gearing (ensure it's not too high), motor timing settings, and ensure adequate airflow for cooling.
  • Inconsistent Throttle/Brake: Re-calibrate the ESC to your radio. Check for any interference or issues with your radio's throttle channel.
