Installation

The Lutron Caseta Smart Dimmer Switch is designed for easy installation, often within 15 minutes, and does not require a neutral wire. Always ensure power is off at the circuit breaker before beginning.

1. Wiring the Dimmer Switch

  1. Turn off power: Locate your circuit breaker and turn off the power to the switch location.
  2. Remove existing switch: Carefully remove the wall plate and unscrew the existing switch from the wall box.
  3. Identify wires: The Caseta dimmer has two black wires (load/hot) and one green wire (ground). Connect these to the corresponding wires in your wall box. This dimmer does not require a neutral wire.
  4. Secure connections: Use wire connectors (provided) to secure all connections.
  5. Mount the dimmer: Gently push the wired dimmer into the wall box and secure it with screws.
  6. Attach wall plate: Install the coordinating wall plate (sold separately).
  7. Restore power: Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker.

2. 3-Way and Multi-Location Setup

The Caseta dimmer can be used in single-pole applications or to create 3-way/multi-location lighting control using a wireless Pico remote (sold separately). No additional wiring is needed for the Pico remote.

  • Single-Pole: One dimmer controls the light(s).
  • Wireless 3-Way: Replace one existing switch with the Caseta dimmer. At the second switch location, remove the existing switch, cap the wires, and mount a Pico remote (PJ2-WALL-WH-L01) over the backbox using a wall mount bracket (sold separately). Pair the Pico remote with the Caseta dimmer.
  • Add a 2nd Switch Anywhere: For lights controlled by a single Caseta dimmer, a Pico remote can be mounted to almost any wall surface (no electrical box, cutting holes, or wiring required) using a wall mount bracket (sold separately). Wirelessly connect the remote to the smart dimmer.
  • Wireless Multi-Location: For 3 or more switches controlling the light(s), replace one switch with the Caseta dimmer. At other switch locations, remove existing switches, cap wires, and mount Pico remotes over existing electrical boxes using brackets.
